Re: What is the magic trick to open your hips?
I have been practicing for the lotus for months and I say that pain is unavoidable, I don't know about you though. I hope you had a great time achieving the lotus with no discomfort.

Re: What is the magic trick to open your hips?
Hi. I progressed a lot during this meantime. Today I was in the sālā of the monastery and meditated for several minutes in the lotus posture. I didn't use my stopwatch to know the time, but it was between 10 and 20 minutes, probably. A great feat! I used not to bear the lotus for more than few minut...

Re: Homosexuality
I don't know if you mean Theravada = the Buddha's teachings, but pandaka is later addition to the Vinaya. The above appears because pandaka is a Vinaya matter rather than a matter for laypeople. I imagine if a gay man was too effeminate, he may have not suited the public image of the Sangha. There ...

I trust Ven. Yìnshùn Dǎoshī.
Actually, I myself select what I regard as early or not mostly based on my intuition. And pandaka is a great red flag anyway.

Re: Homosexuality
Yeah, Vinaya definitely is early, but not all of it, including pandaka.

Re: I'll review every Thai monastery I visit in this thread
Lovely to read about your explorations, Rhino. Why so work averse, though? Work can be done joyfully and sweeping is a wonderful meditation. I'm averse to much work. Though I like the idea of sweeping the monastery moderately. I sometimes do it with a deep gratitude. I'm in a Thai monastery now and...

Re: Homosexuality
Ok, maybe "no early sutta" since this sutta you quoted is also a later addition. The fact pandaka isn't mentioned in the early suttas is itself the evidence. Considering that we do not see the word paṇḍaka appear in any of the early suttas, it is therefore safe to conclude that i...

I don't know if you mean Theravada = the Buddha's teachings, but pandaka is later addition to the Vinaya. The whole thing. There is absolutely no sutta even mentioning the word pandaka.
Regardless of what Theravada says about gays, it's not what the Buddha taught.

Re: I feel depressed living in America but not in Thailand.
"One thing I found when living in Asia was this sense of belonging — even though I am an obvious foreigner — and this used to baffle me. I have lived in India, Malaysia and Thailand. And in all those countries I have felt at home; I always felt as though I belonged. Yet, in many ways, I didn't...

Re: I'll review every Thai monastery I visit in this thread
Also, I left Wat Phu Khong Tong because of the cellphone rule. Not gonna relinquish it. The monastery is really good so it is a shame. If someone here doesn't care about it, this is the monastery I would recommend primarily. And of course, if you don't care about being in a bubble with Westerner mon...

Re: I'll review every Thai monastery I visit in this thread
How about using the internet for learning and self-improvement? Would they let you watch YouTube and buy any self-help book that isn't dhamma? But then there's the vow of poverty.. In monasteries which allow cellphone, you do whatever you want with it, it's up to you. I guess so, you read whatever ...

I used to be very strict with the sixth precept when I was in my home. It was a bit chocking seeing all this here but I'm used.

Re: I'll review every Thai monastery I visit in this thread
If I ever join a monastery it would be to get away from work!!! There’s no way I’m going to sweep leaves . That’s “work”. No thanks. :spy: So go to a Dhammayuttika monastery. Ajahn Chah monasteries love sweeping leaves apparently. And they want you to be a diligent sweeper. Venerable Ajahn Martin s...
