Re: 'drink and drugs that cause carelessness'

I wonder about kombucha: a beverage made of fermented tea. Because it is fermented, it contains a very small amount of alcohol, but not enough to induce intoxication. Minors can purchase it. The ABV is around 0.5. Apparently a ripe banana has around 0.4 ABV. Is there a meaningful difference here? Ne...

Re: How I (think I) broke the 4th precept and the lesson learned

I am now in a position where I feel that it might be wrong to access my test results. If I was only able to get the test because of a lie on my part, would it be more bad kamma to enjoy the fruit of that lie (the results of the test)? What would you do?

Re: How I (think I) broke the 4th precept and the lesson learned

People try to pressure you all the time, it happens. I was once on a 30 day retreat, and some people entered the retreat on day 15. When we washed our dishes, there was a line up with everyone giving eachother ample space, but the people who came in on day 15 were standing literally right beside me...

How I (think I) broke the 4th precept and the lesson learned

Today I went to my local hospital to get a drive through covid-19 test. They handed me a terms of agreement form to sign. It said at the bottom something along the lines of "I have read and agree to these terms". I started reading the form and I could tell that the nurse was surprised that someone w...

Re: Unintentional bad thoughts about Buddha

Hi rag This is simply nature, the way things are - anatta, not controllable. Obviously you don’t wish the bhikkhu harm. People who really wish someone harm embrace the base thoughts on the topic, They really would enjoy if harm came to the object of their hate. I heard a talk where a famous monk ( ...

Re: Unintentional bad thoughts about Buddha

Very strange to see this thread just now, as I have been a sufferer of religious OCD for many years, since even before I became a Buddhist. And just recently I have been grappling very hard with this issue. It is an extremely disheartening condition that has left me frustrated with and perplexed by ...

How are Buddha statues made?

I am not talking about Buddha statues that one might procure from amazon.com or other retail vendors for the general population. It seems that most monasteries have Buddha statues, large and small. Are these works commissioned to artists/craftspeople or are they mass produced and bought on the marke...

Re: Fourth precept question

To preempt the question: “Does selling alcohol violate the fifth precept?” It could, but only if you prompt the customer to buy alcohol because you get a cut of the profits. Trading in alcohol is a wrong livelihood for a Buddhist, but if one is simply working as a cashier in an off-license or super...

Re: Fourth precept question

We have many older customers who are regulars and, typically, employees will just enter their own birthday so as to avoid the hassle of checking the person's ID who they already know to be over 21. Does the computer checkout program validates what's being entered into the birthday text field to con...

Fourth precept question

I work at a very small grocery store. Sometimes I work the register, checking people out. When ringing up alcoholic beverages the computer has a prompt, I believe it just says "birthday" and a text field where I am supposed to input the customer's date of birth in order to ensure that they are over ...
