Re: Relationships and the things we let go of

Is there a hope for having both the things that I want?
Can you hold onto something and let go of it at the same time?

Re: What should practice look like?

Because it seems it's a bout being so generous, benevolent, compassionate, spiritual, that it looks to me that I should become a saint. And I'm asking because I want to frame it. If you take the teachings literally, there is a "here" and a "there". It's not a path to nowhere. If you want to call "t...

Re: Can anyone attain Nibbana?

It would be more correct to say that if one has not committed the five heavy deeds, there is no insuperable obstacle to attaining stream-entry. But whether one can in fact actually attain it depends on the interplay of three factors: one's past good roots (merits, paramis, from past lives); the str...

Re: What should practice look like?

Am I supposed to become a nicer and nicer person, very peaceful on speech and action? Should I be noticing some progress with due time? Depends on what you mean by "nice". Causing harm isn't good, but the Buddha never taught that "niceness" is part of the path. If you see someone who is walking aro...

Balangoda Ananda Maitreya Thero

I just discovered this wonderful teacher. I'm looking for English translations of his books or dhamma talks. I wasn't able to find anything after briefly searching around (except for his Pali text and audio of a talk in English on Metta). Anyone know of anything else that has been translated?

Re: Bojjhangaparitta and healing

Bojjhanga Sutta

samsare samsarantanatam, sabbadukkhavinasane;
satta dhamme ca bojjhange, marasenapamaddane.
So is there a history somewhere of how this "sutta" was compiled from its sources in the SN? Who compiled it exactly?

Don't worry: I'm a pragmatist if nothing else. I was just wondering.

Re: Refuge

Definitely worth reflecting on these as well. However, when it comes to taking refuge in the triple gem, and making use of it as a reflection, it is best to start with the significance of those three things, even if you can only find just a little at first glance. Like you said, you've already made...

Re: Bojjhangaparitta and healing

That is truly wonderful. I wasn't aware of Angulimala's saccakiriyā (this category is mentioned in the thread).

Since we're on this kind of topic, do you happen to know of anything that could be chanted to bring warmth to people who are out in the cold? I'm thinking of the homeless.

Re: How should i live my life?

You should live your life well. Awareness of the effects of intentional action is extremely good, and you have that awareness. Anxiety about the topic is unnecessary. Just reflect on Right Effort. Try to do the best you can, but don't just repeat what you know is bad. The great thing is that the Bud...

Bojjhangaparitta and healing

Bojjhanga Sutta samsare samsarantanatam, sabbadukkhavinasane; satta dhamme ca bojjhange, marasenapamaddane. My understanding is that this "sutta" was compiled by Burmese monks a long time ago from material in the Bojjhanga-samyutta of the SN. Have people found that these sort of things actually hav...

Re: Refuge

Where we rest our mind during daily meditation is a refuge. Yup. Recognizing the ability to be virtuous (the five precepts) and restrain the senses can be a tremendously rewarding recollection as well, and there are many suttas that show it is worthy of much praise. I know it may not sound as excit...
