Re: How far can one self study and practice mahasi noting?

There is only one path to nibbāna, and that is the eightfold path as expounded in the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta
How does this sutta expound all eight factors?

Re: Vinaya

vinayo ca susikkhito
Yes, I was wondering if this refers to discipline in learning and crafts, or more generally to a well-disciplined life. I don't read Pali, so I have no idea how it could be interpreted.

Re: Vinaya

I found this. Posting in case anyone is interested:
Vinaya... [fr. vi+nī, cp. vineti] 1. driving out, abolishing destruction, removal Vin i.3 (asmi-mānassa), 235= iii.3 (akusalānaŋ dhammānaŋ vinayāya dhammaŋ desemi);
Looks like it primarily means the "removal of" something.

Re: Can I start practising on my own?

I am not a buddhist (yet) And what does it mean to be a Buddhist? but I was wondering if this journey could be started on one's own. The journey to where, doing what? There is no theravada center near where I live, so is it ok to start practising (not just reading books) alone, without personal gui...

Vinaya

What is the meaning of the word "vinaya" (breaking it down into parts)? Is the word ever used with reference to laypeople in the Canon?

It's only silly if you don't know what Ajahn Chah is saying here.
What is he saying?

Re: Agamas divergence from Pali Canon, still practiced?

Are there any Agama texts that contain valuable material not found in the Tipitaka? I'm referring to anything that would enhance meditation practice or deepen understanding of major concepts. Otherwise, feel free to define "valuable" as you'd like to.

Re: Brand new to Buddhism and looking at the traditions

The Noble Eightfold Path is the core of the Buddha's teaching in this tradition (Theravada). You should read Bhikkhu Bodhi's text on it. Also Ledi Sayadaw wrote an excellent commentary on it. And the most important thing of all is to bring the teachings into your life, to actually practice them. Thi...

Re: Partner smoking, also weed

What does Theravada Buddhism say about such cases and does any of you have a similar experience at all? All conditioned phenomena are impermanent, non-self, and insufficient/unsatisfactory. While a relationship might have its strong points, these points themselves are subject to the three character...

Re: Theravada Buddhism for Young Generation

First, people who call themselves Buddhist have to hold themselves to a high moral standard. We have to practice what we preach. Talking about kindness, generosity, non-clinging (as is done in many places when introducing Buddhism) and then doing the opposite in "real life" will not help. If we don'...

As for the person who has neither serenity nor discernment: they should approach someone who has serenity and discernment and ask
How should I ascertain who has serenity and discernment, if I lack these myself?

Re: Teachers

Online persona not easy but one clue is whether that person shows aversion or anger more than expected of a true practitioner.
This may be a great clue, thanks. But I find that most people show some level of obvious dosa. So it will not be easy to find a true teacher.

Parasites

Do parasites have "breath"? If so, how can we deal with them without harming them if they're harming us?
