Re: How much money is needed to travel to Thailand for ordination?

So I have decided to ordain. I have been planning for it for a while. I wanted to know about the financial arrangements that one needs to make before being accepted as a Samnera, such as the necessary provisions for visas, medicines, and other related matters. How much time does it take to get acce...

So if you can't trust translations, how do you trust language lessons?

Re: How can lay people lessen our obsession with sensual pleasure?

It isn't as simple as giving up craving chocolate, coffee, and whiskey. It is giving up craving for sense contact. Reaching out to experience through the senses.

Please try the Mahayana version of this forum, Dharma Wheel. In the Theravada you have far fewer options. In the Mahayana I would suggest reciting the Medicine Buddha mantra and dedicating the merit to your feline friend.

Re: does killing insects break the precepts?

The first part of killing is identifying a separate, conscious living being. Plants don't have all 5 aggregates. They don't count. Insects could be closer to plants or they could be closer to animals. Reflexes aren't conscious responses.

A big part depends on if insects have all 5 of the 5 aggregates. Do they?

Speaking for myself, I have started to notice that going for Refuge has started to creep into my bad dreams. It feels like a good sign. I don't mean to suggest that it is an attainment, but it is nice to notice a good habit developing.

Re: First Fetter Question.

It takes time for everything to stop. There will still be results from previous actions of body and mind. I have read that the process can become much more intense once there is a limit to the amount of time available for the results to come back.

Re: Completely gender-segregated retreats?

any serious* men-only retreats? My first reaction is that if you are serious about this, you need serious therapy. There was a story about a mendicant in India walking through town when a woman bumps into him. He complains to her about how she should be watching where she was going because he is ob...

Those things kill 2 million people every year. "Mosquito Dunks are a safe, non-toxic way to kill mosquitoes. Using a bacteria toxic only to mosquito larvae, they kill mosquitoes within hours and last for 30 days or more. Each package includes 20 Mosquito Dunks and each dunk treats 100 square fe...

Re: Heartbeat distraction

I'm a fairly new meditator and often times when I sit, my heartbeat becomes a distraction when trying to focus on the breath. I can feel and hear every beat. If there is background noise, I don't notice as much, but it is still affecting my attention. Any suggestions on how to work around this so i...

Re: Is being naked in front of others wrong

A friend asked me what I thought of how ethical it would be to pose as a nude model for an art class. I couldn’t find something in the suttas that says being naked in front of others is wrong in a non-sexual context, except for a commentary to dhammapada 316. Not reliable enough for me to say one w...

Re: Did buddha dream? Do arhats generally?

If you knew the guy you wouldn't trust racial hatred towards him. Even if the FBI were doing that, and it happened, what would have been their motive? Amusement value. To rub it in her face that her husband was not as good as he tried to appear. It sounds like you are saying that because the FBI wa...

Dr Martin Luther King Jr. was a great Christian Dharma Practitioner. If only all of us would have continually progressive, useful, Awake Dreams such as him. :candle: :buddha1: Are you serious?
