Re: Confusion about kāmacchanda and vyāpāda

One way to deal with sensual desire is described here: Herein, monks, a monk reflects on just this body, confined within the skin and full of manifold impurities from the soles upward and from the top of the hair down: "There is in this body: hair of the head, hair of the body, nails, teeth, s...

Re: Sotapanna and namarupa

Identity view is described as a fetter, so being fettered is the problem, not identity view per se. The act of naming, or conceptualizing, when mistaken to be genuine correspondence, leads to the extremes of existence and non-existence. In other words, i do not think a sotapanna would find value in...

Re: Sotapanna and namarupa

Maybe identity view is not the assumption that the 5 aggregates are self, but not knowing the assumption for what it is. In terms of namarupa, the fetter would be not knowing that the act of naming is an imposition rather than genuine correspondence. If certainty about the nature of naming is attai...

Re: Sotapanna and namarupa

So dependent origination … basically show you that you are not 5 aggregates dependent arising is about its own logic feeling leads to pleasure and craving craving leads to becoming and birth It's a lot, a lot more subtle than that. Your oversimplification is pretty unhelpful. One has to see some ve...

Re: Sotapanna and namarupa

Why should anything happen? Are you talking about the fruit moment specifically? or like some kind of permanent change? In general, nothing happens, only the 3 first fetters are given up and one no longer resorts to future and past identity thinking. I was referring to permanent change. Identity vi...

Re: How long ago the Buddha died for each deva plane

It's true in that such a person is independent of others and will not come to an eighth birth regardless of who's around to teach them Dhamma. They don't need a more accurate interpretation, they mostly need to apply what they already know and not get lazy. But of course they can get a nice boost f...

Re: Celibacy and motivation

That quote seems to be more about relationships than sex. There are relationships where a couple rarely has sex but still a lot of drama.

I would imagine 2 lay sotapannas who are in relationship do not have much drama.

Re: How long ago the Buddha died for each deva plane

This is why if you die a Sotāpanna, you will likely be taught the true dhamma by someone who knows a more accurate interpretation of the buddha dhamma than you would know. Sotāpanna has no need Not true at all, by the way. There's a sutta of a monk attaining Arahantship while he's teaching the dham...

Re: How long ago the Buddha died for each deva plane

The Buddha didn't say that. Instead he said what is in Mahākammavibhaṅga -sutta. Nobody knows who has which karma. Only the Buddha knows. For us karma seems to be completely random. People who did great deeds in the past go to hells, and the opposite to heavens. Are you saying sotapannas can go to ...

Re: Are feelings the gateway to Nibbana?

Are feelings the gateway to Nibbana? No, it's the cessation of feelings and perception that is the gateway to Nibbana. The goal is to turn away and calm down the 5 aggregates because you see them as stressful and not worth having, and when there is nothing left to calm, you attain Nibbana. This is ...
