Suttas on heaven?
Hi friends. What could be some suttas on heaven as in "... he gave a progressive discourse, that is, a talk on giving, virtuous behavior, and heaven; he revealed the danger, degradation, and defilement of sensual pleasures and the benefit of renunciation...". I mean what is a talk on heave...

Re: Are all formed phenomena dukkha or are all polluted phenomena dukkha?
There are three kinds of dukkha: - Dukkha of misery - Dukkha of change - Dukkha of formations Those are the three kinds of dukkha “Bhikkhus, there are these three kinds of suffering. What three? Suffering due to pain, suffering due to formations, suffering due to change. These are the three kinds of...

Re: Sati vs. Samadhi
... seems to confirm that notion to some extent. Goofaholix appears to see the difference in a slightly different manner though?... I see that explanation as one that understands vāyāma, sati, and samādhi as mental prowess, an ability to achieve super-awareness and super-absortion and concentration...

Re: Abandoning pleasure & pain
It is said that in the 4th Jhāna one abandons pleasure and pain. How does this work from a non-absorbed Jhāna point of view? From the traditional perspective pleasure is abandoned in the access to the 4th Jhāna, where there is no physical sensation anymore. From a non-absorbed POV why does someone ...

True. Many believe real liberation comes with death. They call it parinibbana which they believe a superior kind of nibbana.

Re: Is there any proof of reincarnation? I find it hard to believe in it.
I just realised that rebirth is implied in the third and fourth Noble Truths. The Buddha teaches that the end of suffering occurs at liberation, not death. If rebirth does not exist, then the Third and Fourth Noble truths would be wrong, as from a conventional standpoint, the (existence of) "e...

... I may need opinion(s) from all experts in this about Savitakkasavicāro Samādhi, Avitakkavicāramatto Samādhi & Avitakkaavicāro Samādhi. .. . I think vitakka isn't any kind of thought but intentional thought. Vicāra is the pondering of that intentional thought. Like when planning something: Y...

Re: Why a practitioner should be kind?
“Mendicants, there are these five drawbacks of bad conduct. What five? One blames oneself. After examination, the wise rebuke one. One gets a bad reputation. One is lost when one dies. And when the body breaks up, after death, one is reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. The...

Re: Does metta more accurately mean goodwill or loving-kindness?
... It seems to me that the Buddha's description (Bhikkhu Bodhi's translation): "just as a mother with her own life would protect her her dear and only child, so should one develop a mind towards all living beings" implies much more than having no ill-will. Or do you find the translation ...

Re: Does metta more accurately mean goodwill or loving-kindness?
I do not know much Pali, so I understand metta based on its context. In my own understanding, metta is unconditional love. This is spiritual love, not mundane love. I explained this here: metta Do you mean metta is like love? Do you think it's about doing everything in one's power to save someone f...

Re: Does metta more accurately mean goodwill or loving-kindness?
Perhaps metta is the absence of any disposition to do harm and inflict pain. We can call this benevolence but I wouldn't say it means a disposition to actively do good. I think it isn't about fighting battles to bring justice to the world. I think it's more about not doing harm including not doing h...
