Re: Condensing buddhism to friends or relatives

I think your summary is pretty much bang-on. I would like to slightly re-phrase your question though - and would love to hear either your or anybody else´s answer. Condensing dhamma to friends pre-supposes that your friends already know about your interest in it. My question is: How do you decide wi...

Re: Visuddhimagga

I used to accept his arguments but Ajahn Sona is mistaken here. Why do you think so? His argument is corroborated by textual evidence and very well reasoned, in my opinion. See above. The nimitta described by Venerable Buddhaghosa are common occurrences when in deeply absorbed states, and when look...

Re: Visuddhimagga

I refer to it especially for recollections - it gives me a clear structure I can hold on to, which means that the meditation doesn´t get too discursive. For each recollection, you can find specific points/aspects you should focus on so you can simply take them one after another and don´t have to tr...

Re: Conquering Masturbation

I´d say that your efforts will be in vain unless supported by solid concentration, mindfulness and insight. Many people advise asubha meditation, which might help when the urge is really strong, but I don´t think it´s a viable long-term strategy in itself. In fact, you must relax into brahmacharya, ...

Re: Misunderstand about punishment?

When your sexuality is not accepted by society then you will likely suffer, this is what I meant by punishment because it's not pleasure. I can't tell which society rejects a heterosexual compare to homosexual or LGBT. This is not black and white: If you live in a big city in Western Europe, for in...

Re: Misunderstand about punishment?

Without doubt people who are born gay, LGBT, are seen as a punishment, they're reaping the fruit of their bad deeds. Don't say that D1W1, don't say that. For worldlings the workings of kamma are hard to see, obscure, uncertain. None but an enlightened one can tell the working of kamma, the causes a...

Re: what is ariya jhana?

Returning to sutta, AN 9.36 again descibes Ariya Jhana: This passage, however, seems to equate the ariya jhana with the first jhana. The above quote says that the monk first enters and remains in the first jhana and while in that state regards arising phenomena as anicca, dukha and anatta. Could it...

Re: what is ariya jhana?

Returning to sutta, AN 9.36 again descibes Ariya Jhana: There is the case where a monk, secluded from sensuality, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters & remains in the first jhana : rapture & pleasure born of seclusion, accompanied by directed thought & evaluation. He regards whatever phenome...

Re: what is ariya jhana?

Yes. The contemplation of Nibbana by the stream-enterer is a pre-requisite to attaining ariya jhana. As SN 48.10 or the end of MN 118 says, the stream-enterer (Noble Disciple) makes "vossagga" ("letting go"; "release"; "little Nibbana") the primary meditation object prior to attaining the 1st jhana...

Re: what is ariya jhana?

what is it? Ariya jhana is described in MN 117, SN 48.10, end of MN 118, for example. Ariya jhana is supported by Right View (about the abandonment of craving, attachment, becoming & self-view) and has letting go ("vossagga") as its primary meditation object. how different it is from entering? what...

Any place that is quite and comfy should do. I see no problem with bedroom - I meditate on a cushion on my bed (sitting posture).

Re: Cross-legged meditation and knee health

Over time, people (particularly runners and physically active people) damage their knees. Actually, from what I´ve read running can of course damage your knees if you don´t have suitable shoes, are overweight, have a bad running style etc., but if you eliminate these factors it can also be benefiti...

Cross-legged meditation and knee health

Hello my noble friends, I wonder if it is possible to meditate for decades and not have health issues with knees. In a very near future, I will be moving away from an urban area to highlands - to a place where I don´t know anyone etc., which means that I should be able to significantly increase the ...
