Re: Jhana

I think it’s because all topics in Buddhism eventually come back to it. It makes sense. Imagine though, developing the perception of impermanence, the perception of dukkha, the perception of not-self, the perception of a skeleton, of a corpse, of the 32 body parts. According to the suttas, those pe...

Take care fondling with Hindu yoga.

I can't do full lotus, no way. I'm pretty convinced (I'm a white westerner) that it would result in damage to my meniscus after maybe 20 minutes. I'm limited to half lotus, burmese or my trusty seiza bench.

Re: Posture

I used to meditate for at least 8 hours per day, including : 1. sitting on the floor in Thai swastika posture (where both legs are folded in the same direction; thus one ankle in the groin and one ankle to the side) for over 2 hours. 2. standing meditation in one spot for 90 minutes 3. sitting on a...

Re: Jhana

In the forth jhana Nama-rupa, consciousness cycling comes to a full stop. Underlying tendencies fail to impact. I-making stops, LOL With love :candle: Totally and it seems like everyone seems to agree on that. The way I see it is like this: Jhana is the process of paring down mental activity until ...

Re: Posture

Sounds like superstition, including about the "back muscles". I suppose if you count on falling asleep, you need all the help you can get. This is the beauty of full-lotus; in that macho guys can fall asleep while they pretend they are meditating. My advice is unrelated to falling asleep but always...

Re:

Just a couple of pointers. There are no mystical qualities attached to any posture. A posture is just an ordinary position the body may be in. Intermediate postures like crouching, running, standing on the head are also postures, albeit less conducive to long term focused attention. Being upright m...

It's more stable, and using the back muscles like that keeps you awake. I notice better alertness when I try to keep better posture.
BUT, meditating by lying back is very relaxing. Maybe too much lol

Re: Posture

As erect as naturally possible Easy on a seiza bench. However getting back into the groove of sitting half-lotus, the support needed from the erector spinae and others is a little distracting, but the effect on concentration seems to be well worth it. Its good for avoiding the heat of the sun. Defi...

Posture

I started off using standard zafu cushions when learning, but I developed quite a liking for seiza benches and it's now my primary means for sitting. However, I am starting to go back to using a small cushion and sitting half lotus. How important do you think posture is when meditating? How erect sh...

Re: How do YOU meditate?

The various methods of practising Dhamma do not in fact conflict with each other. But the person who practises is likely to be prejudiced and see his own method as being right while other people’s methods have no value. So disagreements arise when one person claims: “It is better to do it my way”. ...

Re: Qualities of mind for purification

My understanding is that when we react to experiences with craving, aversion, and clinging, it creates a sankhara. Which qualities of mind are used to react to experience to create purification? (A reference to a book or sutta would be helpful). Thanks! Kindof, I would invest some time into learnin...

I am beginning to like you.  Good to see a person not tenaciously clinging to views when presented with sound evidence. Thank you and likewise :anjali: In only believe in the final jhana fruition nimitta (called "counterpart sign" it seems) as the only relevant nimitta; whic...
