Re: Canonical defnition of jhana

... You aren’t entirely wrong per se. Letting go is a ceasing of activity, so it’s not a building up of activity. Vitakka-vicara are intentions to let go, of renunciation (Right Intention). The Jhanas are states of letting go which is why the ascetics of DN1 (the ones at the end), who were also loo...

Re: Using Lite Jhana to enter Deep Jhana?

according to sutta, monks and layman like citta can enter without difficulty in 1 or 2 minutes.. maybe buddha can get in 2 or 3 seconds... Yeah it shouldn't really take that long. BUT, that's based on your skill as a meditator, and it may take a VERY long time. The more you chase after it, the wors...

Re: Canonical defnition of jhana

For example Ven. Thanissaro breath meditation instructions focus on manipulating the experience, looking for a pleasant breath sensation and adjusting it. There is a will effort involved and for sure lot of fabricating. Anfd he has some valid arguments. He pointed out, that the phrases used by the ...

DooDoot wrote: Sun May 09, 2021 9:18 pm no. the work of the meditator is to "let go"
Yes, and letting go is a fabrication, is it not?

I see where you're going with this, but I can't deny the jhana itself is fabricated.

Re: Canonical defnition of jhana

Jhana appears unrelated to Anapanasati. Anapanasati appears to be access concentration. in Anapanasati, there is no "reviewing consciousness". I get what you're saying. If you're practicing all of the steps, that gets you to access, then once absorption, the sutta itself sortof becomes irrelevant, ...

Re: Canonical defnition of jhana

MN 119's jhana pericope meaning "body" still stands as an interesting topic of discussion. The reason is this: in jhana, nama-rupa is still present. In meditation, the work being done by the meditator is to fabricate the way the object is held by the mind so that the mind does not waver from it. The...

Canonical defnition of jhana

This will serve as a debate thread ++my own thoughts about this +++ Most commentarial material that I've read seems to use the term access concentration to describe a state in which the hindrances are absent but the jhana factors are either not present or are not strong. My opinion on this is that i...

Re: How is it possible to attain arahantship without jhana?

It seems possible .. but and the Eightfold Path? The Blessed One said, "Now what, monks, is the Noble Eightfold Path? Right view, right resolve, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration. "And what, monks, is right concentration? (i) There is...

As I understand.
How does one actually sit and practice vipassana meditation?
The parctioner jumps strait in to investigating the sankhara dhammas. When the nivaranas are tranquilized and the heart becomes well collected upon this investigation.
Sounds like jhana to me.

Re: How is it possible to attain arahantship without jhana?

This is the fundamental argument of those who contend that the jhanas are necessary for attaining Nibbāna: that is, that it is the Jhana that is effecting the attaining. This is an incorrect perception: it is the insight into impermanance and the letting go that is the fundamental tool for attainin...

Re: How is it possible to attain arahantship without jhana?

Could you explain the format of this in more detail, please? :anjali: Of course. Seeing the drawbacks in the five aggregates, the mind will look for a place safe from it, beyond the range of what is inconstant, suffering, and not self. The mind loses interest in those things, taking up an object in...

Re: How is it possible to attain arahantship without jhana?

Its not possible to attain arahantship without jhana. Its even worse when jhana is misconstrued. Those who underestimate what jhana is will obviously underestimate what arahant is. Soon there will be Arahant-Lite, similar to Daniel Ingram. My view is this: If vipassana meditation is practic...
