Re: Using common sense and reasoning to conclude step 3 of breath meditation is talking about the physical body

The attainment where the Buddha can't hear sounds is an arupa attainment, not the four jhanas. it's just, like your opinion, man. The sutta doesn't name it. Ekkagata factor alone implays, that rupa jhanas go like in this sutta, as singular experience, mind data only. As far as i know, "pleasan...

Re: Using common sense and reasoning to conclude step 3 of breath meditation is talking about the physical body

I think it is wrong to be oblivious to how your physical body is doing. I got this pointer from Ven. Vimalaramsi, I don't see why one can't focus on the entire breath ( call it "body of breath" or whatever ), the body ( to relax any tightness and tension ), and all nama factors that arise...

Re: Ajan Brahm Meidtation Question

Hi Heaviside My meditation practice is influenced by this method and I ve read about it a lot, so perhaps I can share some thoughts with you. If your focus naturaly shifts toward front of the head, fine. Let it be. Some people here claim A. Brahm's method involves forcing, over focusing, narrowness ...

Re: David Reynolds on mysticism

Given that the nikaya materials were all finalised at the first council shortly after the Buddha's death, there is not enough time for intellectual monks to shift the weightage of insight approach to become the main focus of Buddhism. Or did that happen right at the first council's discussion? What...

Re: David Reynolds on mysticism

Whay does Mysticism has to do with dhamma ? With N8FP ? Quiet a lot, especially if one doesn't imagine Nibbana as mere extinction, but something beyond words and concepts. Plus, Noble 8 ends with Samadhi, after all. And perhaps starts, too. According to some important scholars, such as Mircea Eliad...

Actually, it was supposed to be 4NT, not TNT. Sorry. I don't use dynamite in order do dissappear, not yet :)

Re: 4 noble truths. What are they?

What are the 4 noble truths? I realize I can look it up, but I am suspicious of online opinions and things like "life is dukkha". Or "There is suffering" Does it have anything to do with no-soul or no self teaching? What about impermance, change and death? Rebirth? What are they...

Re: How to start practicing Buddhism (From what I know)

In my opinion, the best way to start Buddhism is to know what is the right view (the first item of the Noble Eightfold Path) The reason is that you find five precepts and Eight precepts are in other religions as well. :goodpost: Dhamma is something more than just concentrating and taming of the min...

Re: Bad experiences with Buddhism

How common is it for someone to conclude that their defilements are too strong to be defeated by Buddhist methods and basically give up? Thoughts on this? Is there anything in the Pali Canon that discusses this? Doubt ( vicikiccha ) is one of the five hindrances. It means all practicioners have to ...

Re: metta and hatred

For information Russia is a Federation of different respublics. Its composed of about 152 different folks. Such religions as Islam, Judaism and Buddhism are also official religions there. There is a whole Buddhist (tibetain) Republic - Buryatia. Also there is a quite big Theravada lay community, an...

. From there it is going to be impossible to apply the attitude in all directions. Why? Because these individual instances of suffering are believed to each require specific solutions to specific causes. How to end a war. How to solve world hunger. How to solve the climate problem. How to best end ...

…But even in their settlement they fight— seeing that, I grew uneasy. https://suttacentral.net/snp4.15/en/sujato My goodness, that is a POWERFUL line! Actually, this poem about Samvega is one of my favourite pieces in the Canon, but I ve never seen this exact translation. "But even in their se...

Re: metta and hatred

... I think you would feel better if you could see it more distantly. If it is about your family, your neighbors, your country, your fellow neighbor country, and your enemy, you'll feel bad of course. You will hate of course. Hating is something personal. You hate because this time is about you and...

Re: metta and hatred

I' ve agreed with the moderator, that it shouldn't be a political discussion, but a topic about metta practice in tough circumstances. But your post is so absurd, that I must react, man. So, I worry about innocent people being killed. Not the geopolitics. It's about women and children executed and ...
