When Food Becomes Poison
I feel I have benefited greatly from choosing organically grown fruits and vegetables (in the US) and I see AN 4.70 as a support for this within the Suttas. I am interested in others' take on this sutta in regards to whether it suggests that the social degradation (of values) automatically leads to ...

Re: Scared on Leaving Vajrayana and Staying In It
I empathize with the uncomfortable nature of your situation. Having learned Tibetan means you have invested a lot of time and energy and probably acquired caring friends and an identity to go with it. In considering what the Buddha taught within the sutta nikayas a few passages come to mind that mig...

Re: Kammic consequences of taking the precepts
What you can see in religions is that there is the official doctrine, but there's also an inofficial metadoctrine, such as "Yes, God will punish sinners with eternal damnation, but I can rest assured that I am not amongst them" or "Kamma is indeed difficult to understand, but I am su...

Vishakaya, Migara's Mother
Is Vishaka, the questioner in MN 44, who questions Dhammadinna, the same as Vishaka, Migara's Mother, who the Buddha addresses in Ud 8.8, among other suttas?
It would make sense, in that a woman lay follower would approach and question a Bhikkhuni in this way.

Help Locating a Sutta
I am searching for the sutta in which Ven. Ananda gives the explanation for why the Buddha's dispensation includes desire for liberation even though liberation involves the ending of all desire. He gives the analogy of desiring to go to a park. When you arrive at the part the desire to go to the par...

Re: Buddhism and platonism
I am currently writing a book comparing Platonism and the major forms of Indian spiritual philosophy. I don't go into the fine print like this discussion involves, more staying to the vast structural similarities between the systems. But I have thought a lot about the topic discussed here, specifica...

Re: Why does Vasavatti not stop Mara?
MA.i.28 was cited. Is this a commentary? I have read commentary attributions of Mara as a Deva but this never made sense to me. Mara is described repeatedly as performing evil actions within the Suttas. How can a Deva perform evil action, especially in such a high level heaven such as Those Controll...

Yes, but this offerings to devas are done in order to gain merits or to gain other worldly benefits, compassion and protection. Thank you for this attentive and detailed response. You write that "this offerings to devas are done in order to gain merits or to gain other worldly benefits." ...

Re: Traditional Indian Ritual Worship of the Gods
I wonder whether suttas like the following show the wrong grasp of the dhamma in one who makes such pronouncements about the fruitlessness of ritual worship and chanting: "In whatever place a wise man sets up his home, here we should feed the virtuous, the controlled who lead the holy life. To ...

Traditional Indian Ritual Worship of the Gods
I recently heard a very popular Canadian monk, ordained in the Thai tradition, speak about the Buddha's teachings on traditional Indian worship of the Gods as was common in his day and exists in India to this day. This monk said that in regards to body kamma or acts of the body which produce good ka...

Sevana -- Associating or Service from Sn2.4
The Mangala Sutta (Sn2.4) contains the Pali "sevana" and seems consistently translated as "associating with" the wise. This is one of the Buddha's recommendations for what is auspicious "mangalam." There are other suttas however that seem to suggest that a legitimate tr...

Re: The Dhamma Wheel Memorization Challenge
I aspire to memorize the Dhatuvibhanga Sutta MN140 in English. I really appreciate the advice given so far in this thread. I'm going to try a few of the mentioned techniques like daily reciting, copying out by hand, working paragraph by paragraph successively and cumulatively, using the mnemonic tec...

Re: New book: The Only Way to Jhāna by Ajahn Nyanamoli
From chapter 9: Such a samādhi practice will result in the pleasure that the Buddha praises, the pleasure that is different from the pleasure of sensuality, that of not being bothered, the pleasure of being withdrawn from danger, the pleasure of internal safety of a mind that has turned away from t...
