Re: Why schism?

Furthermore, isn't the schism causing the appearance of new Buddhist schools? There were many of them such as The Sautrāntika or Sutravadin (Sanskrit, Suttavāda in Pali;), Sarvastivada, Vibhajjavada, Pudgalavada, Mulasarvastivada, then later Theravada, Mahayana, Vajrayana, Tantrayana, secular Buddh...

Re: Is it breaking of Vinaya if a monastery set up an endowment fund?

Some times share market crash about 50%. So you can lose 50% of your investment. Not if you have it invested in ETFs, which are a mix of several top companies. The largest single day percentage drop was in 1987 at -22% (U.S. Dow Jones market). Nothing has come close to that drop in terms of percent...

Re: Is it breaking of Vinaya if a monastery set up an endowment fund?

It sounds like a good idea, imo. When there is an endowment, the principal is not touched, it is just the interest income that is used, as needed. Right now interest rates are near rock bottom, so maybe they might invest some of it in the market? If so, as long as it was only solid, good companies (...

Re: Poll: Abhidhamma and Theravada.

Was abhidhamma recited in the 1st council & by whom ? Opinions vary, but apparently it was not. " Then the venerable Kassapa the Great informed the Order, saying: 'Your reverences, let the Order listen to me. If it seems right to the Order I could question Upali on discipline.' Then the venerable U...

Re: Tasawwuf and Theravada

The doctrine of the trinity where all three are fully divine means there are three gods . It's somewhat common in Greek Mythology, long before Christianity. The New Testament was written in Greek, not Hebrew or Aramaic. Congratulations on leaving Christianity. Next up in your spiritual progression:...

Re: Can a monk tell his followers that he is not fully enlightened?

It is worrying if that Bhante G is not even Sotapanna, what hopes we have? :D From what is written above, Bhante G did not say that, nor did anyone else. When asked the question if he is enlightened or not, he said no. Usually when people ask "are you enlightened"? they mean full enlightenment, not...

Re: Poll: Abhidhamma and Theravada.

I chose number 2 for one of my options. I wouldn't call it "invented by the monks" though. I'd say it's more like their understanding of the Dhamma-Vinaya and their elaboration, commentary on it. And then for my other two choices, some might find it surprising for me to answer numbers 8 & 10. I do b...

Re: Scholars agree: Therigatha and Theragatha are faked up?

afaik, most EBT scholars and experts place them in the EBTs. Sujato and Brahmali count them as EBT. In Thomas Rhys Davids' account, it's right up there with the Sutta Nipata, which is considered old / original Dhamma-Vinaya. https://www.dhammawiki.com/index.php?title=1-10_early_to_recent_Chronology_...

Re: Retrofuturist's Brief Sutta-Based Refutation of Abhidhamma

When people like Paul, Ajahn Braham, Ven. Sujato is in a powerful position that can inhibit free inquiry. My object is not to evangelize anything what I am saying is to allow free inquiry. That is what Paul is doing (the latter); he is allowing free inquiry. He has presented a well-organized, coher...

Re: In which way the Sutta Central Project is another Abhidhamma project?

Greetings, Interesting. I thought that the classification for works that are "seeking to explain and expand on the suttas" was Atthakathā (i.e. commentary), not Abhidhamma. Metta, Paul. :) I agree with Paul. It sounds more like a commentary, in this case, a modern commentary, as opposed to the olde...

Re: Is it compulsory to accept Abhidhamma as a part of doctrine to be considered as Theravada?

They are part of a sub-school. Just like how the Sautrāntikas of old never formerly broke away from their parent school, Sarvāstivāda, despite rejecting the Mahāvibhāṣa and Abhidharma Sujato et al. are Suttavādins who haven’t formerly broken away. Cool, I kind of like the name, Suttavadi...

Re: Is it compulsory to accept Abhidhamma as a part of doctrine to be considered as Theravada?

The Abhidhamma is part of the Pali Canon, the scriptures of Theravada Buddhism. A Theravadin who accepts the Abhidhamma is of course a Theravadin, so the question is what about the Theravadin who rejects Abhidhamma? Bhantes Sujato and Brahmali are clearly Theravada monks who focus on EBTs. What wou...
