Re: Is Buddhism about non-dualism?

Buddha's highest teaching is non-duality! Nirvana is below the non-duality! I didn't listen or watch the video, but see that it is Professor Thurman. He is a Vajrayana (Tibetan) Buddhist, not Theravada. As I mentioned, some forms of Mahayana could be considered non-dualism in their doctrine, but no...

Re: Is Buddhism about non-dualism?

Is Buddhism about non-dualism? No, perhaps one of the misconceptions of Buddhism due to New Age non-dualism and some forms of modern Hindu movements. good and evil puthujjana and sekha violence and non-violence sila and immorality samsara and nibbana kamma-vipaka is individual from deeds and misdee...

Re: Tipitaka protection act Sri Lanka

The Bill also suggests legal action against those who ‘distort’ the Tripitaka once it is passed as a law. The draft states, a person who alters, defaces, distorts, destroys, causes to be destroyed, humiliates, degrades, misuses, misinterprets the Theravada Tripitaka, Pali Atthakatha, Pali Teeka and...

Re: Do You recommend Goenka ten days Vipassana retreat?

The number 5 option appears silly; why would it matter what ethnicity / race he is? I notice there are about 3 yes options and 5 no options. This might mislead some with the results as those who do not recommend would have their voting spread out among 5 options. Also, allowing multiple choices can ...

Re: Can a monk refuse to teach dhamma ?

Now i start to realise why many decades since i heard peoples says Theravada are hinayana . Get it now . They have a small heart . My friends learn from this Mahathera for more than 10 years , they said he told them the secret teaching can only be imparted to few selected monk disciple and n...

Re: Can a monk refuse to teach dhamma ?

Of course the monk reserve the right not to engage with anyone but he accepted when foods and moneys offered . But if he dont want to teach even though he is very learned and we are sincere , then as a buddhist in turn do not have to support him or the sangha , might as well forget about practicing...

Re: Monastics accepting medicine

For the time being, however, the question seems academic, for no country has yet made vaccination mandatory. Not yet, but may be getting closer to that. Or it might become a de facto requirement when nations start requiring to see vaccination cards for entry to planes, trains, restaurants, and stor...

Re: Population reduction

This conspiracy theory nonsense shouldn't be allowed on the forum. Conspiracy theories and those who promulgate them are dangerous. There is nothing wrong with population planning and lowering the human birthrate until it fall below replacement levels. Killing or harming other beings on whatever id...

Oh okay, I missed that there is another 1% (of the previous two conditions), then in that case, the math by Buddhaghosa would be wrong, given the sutta accounts of arahants and noble ones in the thousands.

Re: The Mathematics of Buddhaghosa

World population is approximately 8,000,000,000
1% = 80 million (for preliminary work)
1% of 80 million = 800,000

That sounds plausible, likely.

Re: The Mathematics of Buddhaghosa

In 500 BC the population of India was 35 million. Given the lower limit, 35 people may have been able to enter jhana at the time the Buddha taught. Given any upper limit or even a middle approximation, zero people in the Buddha’s time could have reached jhana. The Mathematics of Buddhaghosa are won...
