Re: Plagarism or copy pasting is stealing?

I have copy-pasted some Suttas to Dhamma Wiki, but only those that are in public domain, offered for free and my distribution is also for free, no charges or money involved. For the translations of most of the suttas and passages from the Pali Canon, the great Theravada website resource, Access to I...

I don't know who chose that date, but I like it. At least it's in May and almost always Wesak is in May.

It could be a way of "westernizing" the Wesak date, instead of using the Full Moon date.

Maybe his good kamma (actions) outweighed the negative?

Yes, according to the Sutta account, he was a stream-entrant.

Re: Is dhammawiki.com article on 'Last thought moment' correct?

Ven. Dhammika: While the Buddha understood the mind to be a `flow' or `stream' of mental events (vi¤¤ànasota), later abhidhamma thinkers speculated that it was actually a string of individual thought moments (cittavãthi) arising and passing away at great rapidity. Later still, the theory developed t...

Re: Money with jhana

Certainly a lot of "poor people" get a frivolous attachment to fancy cars and nice TV's, etc., that they conceive of themselves as "never owning." Also, the poor are more likely statistically to commit petty crimes motivated by greed. Am I making it "class warfare" now? No, it's okay; you'...

Re: Money with jhana

Hi Coëmgenu, Yes, I agree with most of what you wrote. It is a rare man indeed to have wealth like Anathapindika and still attain to high levels; but it is a rare man indeed who attains to any high Buddhist levels, regardless of class. Just as there can be greed, anger, jealousy, ill-will, etc among...

Re: Money with jhana

Thanks for the replies. This is my first post. I am not hindered to jhana by lack of a big bank account. From experience there seems to be a hindrance to jhana from having too much money. Have you read of monks prohibited from having money. I suspect this is the real reason. The reason that money m...

Re: What today's monasteries need most - bhikkhus or lay supporters?

In terms of pastoral duties, a monastery doesn't need too many monks. A few monks could more than handle the pastoral duties for a community. However, that view is from our Judaeo-Christian upbringing. Monasteries' main purposes are not pastoral duties in Buddhism, but rather for striving for nibban...

Re: What are the "sins" of Buddhism

It depends on how you define "sin." Using the traditional definition of a transgression against God and God's commandments, then no, Buddhism doesn't have sin. People violate precepts out of confusion, ignorance, greed, attachment not because they are evil or "sinful." Precepts are voluntary, not co...

Ajahn Chah was great. If he had been born in China or Japan, he probably would have been a famous Chan or Zen master. Luckily for Theravada, he was born in Thailand.

Re: Where to find a monastery that does not bow to statues?

Want to find a monastery that does not bow to statues. :buddha2: What do you have against bowing to statues? Perhaps some prior cultural conditioning? I as ask that because I came from a culture that highly shunned bowing to statues, so it took me some time to get over that, myself. I don't know of...
