Re: A touchstone for Classical Theravadins

Regarding "ultimately real" in Theravāda/early Buddhism I wouldn't be so sure: "And what should the man do in order to be doing what should be done with the raft? There is the case where the man, having crossed over, would think, 'How useful this raft has been to me! For it was in dependence on this...

Re: A touchstone for Classical Theravadins

Madhyamaka avoids asserting either existence or non-existence. Nagarjuna was at pains to make it clear that he was putting forward no metaphysics. So the point is not that something exists or does not, but firstly to even understand what is meant when we say "it exists". Siderits says: " [according...

Re: A touchstone for Classical Theravadins

Garfield is not a top Madhyamaka expert. Top Madhymaka expert is, for example, Mark Siderits. In his interpretation, the true meaning of Madhyamaka is absolute non-being of everything. Everything and anything is literally non-existent. There is not anything. Madhyamaka avoids asserting either exist...

Re: Yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ (yatvādhikaraṇametaṃ)

Here is some relevant info: "5.14 Sutta no. 497. Yatehi paccattavacanassa to nidānādīsu When followed by the word nidāna (cause, origin), nominative case after ya and ta sometimes becomes ‘to’, for instance, yatonidānaṃ (Because of this, so, therefore, on account of which), tatonidānaṃ, yatvādhikara...

Re: Catalogues of kāmo/kāmā/kāmaguṇā

You would also benefit greatly if consulted the paper "Words for love in Sanskrit" by famous Sanskritologist Minoru Hara. As far as I remember a great deal of the paper is about the word "kāma" and the respective verbal root. https://www.jstor.org/stable/41913379?seq=1#metadata_info_tab_contents I c...

Re: how to deal with demons

. To me, it is schizophrenia and I saw them in Hospital, really unfortunate and disturbing. so those suttas that describe the Buddha, Anuruddha, etc, hearing devas conversing when developing psychic powers or those suttas where Mara is intruding are really about schizophrenia? Oh, so now you talking...

Re: 'Signless Concentration'

Reading some of the work of Jan Gonda brings this out even more. Based on his research it seems the Upanishads couched their view of Ātman/Brahman in terms of Sarvām/Sabbaṃ. According to Gonda Sarvām/Sabbaṃ doesn't mean "all" as in everything here but rather "whole", by which what is meant is the s...

The Best Official UFO Evidence
I think the best evidence is what Commander David Fravor witnessed. And it is officially confirmed by the Air Force etc.

People like Greer only discredit the field , IMO.

Medical doctors get called "doctors" in English too. If you are a doctor and your last name is Chayer, you are "Dr. Chayer" in English as much as someone with a PhD named "Watson-Russell" is "Dr. Watson-Russell" in whatever field their doctorate is in. People need to remember that there is more tha...
