corpse decay science video describing the first of STED 9siv (nava-sivathika)

science video describing the first of STED 9siv (nava-sivathika) ⚠️warning: In my opinion, the 3 min slideshow is pretty tame, but the animated GIF of a real time lapsed corpse at the bottom of the article may be diffficult for the faint of heart. Re: Dictionary of Pali Idioms

Thanks! how well does searching really work with that pdf? Very few diacritical symbols seem to get recognized by the OCR.

Re: Vedana and (physical) body vinnana

Pls explain how one differentiate vedana from bodily vinnana such as a sensation of itchy or coldness sense in body . Is it vedana or vinnana ? :thanks: MN 18 is a good sutta to see the hierarchy of where vinnana and vedana fit in to experience. https://lucid24.org/mn/mn018/index.html for the eye, ...

Re: Dictionary of Pali Idioms

Thanks. What's on the invisible text layer? If it was able to OCR a decent version of the image files with searchable text, can we have a version of just the text conversion, without images? it says it won't download because that pdf file is more than 500MB. OK, for your convenience, I have added a ...

Re: Dictionary of Pali Idioms

it says it won't download because that pdf file is more than 500MB. How in the world can a text dictionary be that big? The entire PED in html text source is only a few megabytes. Dear Ko Khanti, I am sometimes not really sure I fully understand how to use it to its full potential, like how to look ...

Re: Paranimmitavasavatti Realms and Devas

How about stop making excuses and blaming māra for everything and find workarounds and solutions? If you're serious about your practice, sleep in a different room, find quiet places to meditate. And work on meditating under any condition, quiet, noisy, distracted. It can be done. All that's required...

Re: Paranimmitavasavatti Realms and Devas

Māra = the deva referenced in the OP. mara = death. Two different words and meanings. Ma- is death. Mara is whatever the force that leads to death. we can also say this samsaric world is a manifestation of Mara. Some history background. Once there are two clans of gods. One clan is the dragon clan, ...

Re: Question about learning some suttas by heart

Hey. Some suttas I really love, like the whole Atthakavagga (Snp 4) and Parayanavagga (Snp 5). I already know the latter by heart, in English, ... That's awesome! How long does it take you to recite Snp 4 and 5? I was thinking about memorizing Snp 5 (in pali), 18 of the main suttas skipping the pro...

Re: Pali Term: Bodhi

I prefer 'awakening' over 'enlightenment'. I understand what B. Bodhi is saying and why. But there already are pali words to express 'enlightnement', such as "aloko udapadi". And it's not just metaphorical enlightnement, it's actual perceivable light in meditation, or at at times regular people seei...

I would say only the 4th jhana, a well developed one where one has enough light and jhana battery sufficiently charged to be able to see visions in meditation, would fall under vimokkha #1. https://notesonthedhamma.blogspot.com/2021/05/8-vimokkha-collection-of-research.html also see: https://lucid24...

see MN 121 and MN 122, the two main suttas on sunnata.

in EBT sunnata includes all the progressively more refined samadhi's, including akincayatana, and animitta samadhi.

Re: in Abhidhamma book 2 Vibhanga, what does it mean to be derived from suttas versus derived from Abhidhamma?

Thanks Bhante, unfortunately I can't edit the OP to make the question more clear. What I'm really driving at, is to what extent are the 18 Suttantabhājanīya sections (derived from suttas) in the 18 Ab Vb's supposed to be in agreement with the suttas? The introduction to the English Vb translation wh...

nama and rupa: sutta or abhidhamma definition?

In the suttas, I've only seen nama defined this way, such as in SN 12.2: https://lucid24.org/sn/sn12/sn12-002/index.html#flink-12 ♦ “katamañca, bhikkhave, nāma-rūpaṃ? "And-what, monks, (is) name-and-form? vedanā, saññā, feelings, perceptions, cetanā, phasso, intentions, contacts, manasi-kāro — menta...

Re: in Abhidhamma book 2 Vibhanga, what does it mean to be derived from suttas versus derived from Abhidhamma?

Thanks Bhante. I read the introduction as you suggested, up to the point where it started summarizing each of the 18 vb's, and from there I skimmed, and read only a few of the vb summaries in full (especially the bojjhanga and jhana vb). May I ask how you came to your conclusion, that an interpretat...
