Re: Offering food "through" the internet.

I understand that theravada monks who follow the commentarial explanation of the rule without question wont agree, i do not expect a different result. Again, for the purpose of harmonious discussion, it's really unhelpful to keep referring to parts of the Suttavibhanga as commentary. Because there ...

Re: Offering food "through" the internet.

Who created that commentary? Some monks who felt that they could improve on the Buddha's ruling? who is to know? Either way the commentary is a later add on to that which is already perfect. OK, so you need to frame this whole discussion very carefully . It would have been great if this would have ...

Can you tell us what you will accept as proof? Because JamesTheGiant already told you what the traditional Theravada teaching is and you are claiming that it is just his view.

Re: Visa to stay at monastery in the U.S as a European?

There are more than a few European monks who have stayed at monasteries here in the US for yeas. I don't know how the process works with immigration etc but it does seem to happen. Yes, but there are two aspects. One is on the side of the monastery. They can be quite willing to sponsor people who a...

Re: Visa to stay at monastery in the U.S as a European?

You really need to talk to the specific monastery. In general it is very, very difficult to get visas for staying in a monastery. And as a general rule monasteries won't sponsor lay people. Even getting visas for monks is difficult. Honestly if you are in the EU you'd be better off trying to find a ...

Abbots aren't really a thing in the Vinaya. I know this may seem shocking, but it's basically true. Decisions are made by the group. And the number of punishments allowed are limited.

Re: Population reduction

First off, for the love of all that is good, Can people please stop quoting entire threads in their posts!!! Now... Regarding the monastic and vaccine refusal, did the buddha not refuse (in sort) everything the government required of him? This is absolutely false. In fact in the Vinaya, the Buddha s...

Re: Keep away from Mahamuna sect in Sri Lanka?

Also, monks are not allowed to study Abhidhamma. This is absolutely false. You are just spreading rumors. I'm going to stop engaging with you because you just pull out more false things when another is challenged. Things that can be read on their websites are one thing. I'm not debating those. But ...

Re: Keep away from Mahamuna sect in Sri Lanka?

Discuss what? I'm still bemused as to what this thread is about. It seems to be about "people are saying" gossip and petty grievances (e.g. the fish thing) with just enough truth to keep going. Conversely, the bigger issue as it appears to me is that Sri Lankan Buddhism is so parochial and national...

Re: Sri Lanka, awe-inspiring Land of Stupa

still I am worrying about the food hygiene there. And this issue also kept me from India for many years. Food hygiene is fine in Sri Lanka. Even water quality is fine as long as you stick to filtered. That's a fairly standard thing. Locals drink filtered water because of the high mineral content of...

Re: Is it breaking of Vinaya if a monastery set up an endowment fund?

Trading is not gambling. Gambling is betting on the outcome of sports events, the play of cards, the throw of a dice, etc. I guess I see it as gambling on the market, not investing in a business. Once you are picking things like money market accounts, you really are making a decision on how much yo...

Re: Is it breaking of Vinaya if a monastery set up an endowment fund?

without incurring significant risk. I agree with everything you said, but I think this point is the key (although in any case not a Vinaya issue). I once donated what was for me at the time a large amount to a monastery that I later found out was investing money they had saved. Because I got more i...

Re: Keep away from Mahamuna sect in Sri Lanka?

People have been making crazy accusations for as long as this monk has been popular. If you are not aware how stagnant the popular religion has become in Sri Lanka, it's hard to imagine what a threat to the establishment he is. If he doesn't do enough traditional things they accuse him of rejecting ...

Re: One's enemy

I've heard it said that one's enemy is one's best teacher. I'm not sure you have heard the Buddha say that, though. This is very much a Vajrayana concept. I'm not saying it's wrong. Or that you can't learn things from bad situations. But anything in the Suttas is going to be a step or two away from...
