Re: Can a monk tell his followers that he is not fully enlightened?

Greetings, So how would you answer this question if you were monks (or when you were a monk.) :D ...usually I just reply that laypeople should never ask a bhikkhu about his attainments, for such a question is in effect an invitation for the bhikkhu to commit a Vinaya offence. That would seem like th...

Dhammavamsa wrote: Wed Jun 16, 2021 10:23 am Well retro, you've made a big claim.
With every other sect (bar one?) making their own Abhidharmas, the bigger claim would be that "ours" traced back to the Buddha, yet somehow no other sect possessed it.

Thus have I heard.

Re: Poll: Abhidhamma and Theravada.

Greetings Robert, Wouldn't it have been easier for the non-Theravada schools to bring attention to the fact that the Theravada were smuggling in a whole, huge, fake addition to what was recited at the first council. Wouldn't that alone have sunk the Theravada: why try to match the Theravada in such ...

Re: What exactly the meaning of Nirodha in Buddhism?

Greetings Sarath, What exactly the meaning of Nirodha in Buddhism? I found the following in the net. https://tylandrum.com/the-meaning-of-nirodha/ ... which is about the meaning of nirodha outside of Buddhism. As such, this topic is not fit for the General Theravada Discussion section. Please attemp...

Re: Poll: Abhidhamma and Theravada.

Greetings Robert, If I remember correctly some of the other schools do have some type of Abhidhamma, albeit not the same as Theravada. An obvious reason for this is that the Abhidhamma is rather detailed and while some suttas can be misconstrued to suit a erroneous view, it is more difficult to do t...

Re: Poll: Abhidhamma and Theravada.

Greetings, From the Mahavamsa (older than the Commentaries )about how the various other schools arose: ... That rehearsal of the Saddhamma arranged at the beginning by the great theras such as Mahaakassapa, is called the Theravaada, for the first hundred years it was undivided. But later arose other...

Re: Poll: Abhidhamma and Theravada.

Greetings Robert, At times Abhidhamma is classified as part of the Nikayas: The Expositor (Atthasalini). Buddhaghosa's Commentary On The Dhammasangani The First Book Of The Abhidhamma Pitaka. Translated by Pe Maung Tin. pp. 35-38, Thus as rehearsed at the[first] Council, the Abhidhamma is a Pitaka b...

Re: A touchstone for Classical Theravadins

Greetings, We have a forum that contains a massive amount, possibly a majority of crypto-Madhyamaka-Yogacarins (everything is non existent, and/or imaginary/hallucination). I don't know of anyone on this forum who holds such a view. It would appear to be a strawman you have created due to misunderst...

Greetings, Given that this topic provides no connection to Theravada and is just about a member who has switched from one non-Buddhist religion to another, this topic is outside the scope of this forum. I recommend Dharma Paths if anyone wishes to pursue the conversation any further. Metta, Paul. :)

Re: Retrofuturist's Brief Sutta-Based Refutation of Abhidhamma

Greetings Bundokji, In SN 35.23, the Buddha taught: Mendicants, suppose someone was to say: ‘I’ll reject this all and describe another all.’ They’d have no grounds for that, they’d be stumped by questions, and, in addition, they’d get frustrated. Why is that? Because they’re out of their element. ” ...

Re: Poll: Abhidhamma and Theravada.

Greetings,

I've got no problem with the presence of Abhidhamma within Theravada, other than for any Abhidhamma evangelists who try to ex-communicate those who don't subscribe to Abhidhamma or the commentaries.

Re: Retrofuturist's Brief Sutta-Based Refutation of Abhidhamma

Greetings, So I should look in the English dictionary? Look, I want to search the Suttas for my self. Suttas have been quoted throughout this topic. By all means review the Pali of them if you are an expert in reading Pali. Don't think that I don't understand what you are doing. I've already told yo...
