Re: Sallatha Sutta SN 36.6 - The Arrow (or dart, thorn)

And where is the sutta basis for that? Kaya, especially when contrasted in a passage against mano, citta, cetasika, nama, etc., in the suttas always means kaya is the physical body that can experience physical pain. The simile should give you a pretty good idea too. You're getting shot by a physica...

We like to know more about [...] Wat Khao Sanamchai which you have also praised here It's a monastery in the tradition of the late Acharn Naeb Mahaniranonda, a laywoman who taught Abhidhamma and a form of kāyānupassanā based on contemplation of dukkha in the four postures. I don't know if she's ali...

Re: 'drink and drugs that cause carelessness'

majjapa is a drunkard Majjapāna - intoxicating drink - is an example of majja being used as an adjective. Majjavikkaya - trading in intoxicants - is an example of majja being used as a noun. Majjapa is also an example of majja being used as a noun. Since the suffix -pa means "a drinker" (of any kin...

Re: Is NIrodha Samapatthi (the cessation of perception and feelings) an aspect of consciousness hence within the five ag

What is the reason only Anagami and Arahant can enter this state. Why other Jhana practitioners enter it in this life itself. Why they have to die to be reborn in this state. See the Path of Purification , chapter XXIII sections 16-52 https://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/nanamoli/PathofPurif...

Re: Is Abhidhamma the Buddha's teaching?

But some impose their interpretation of what "mental formations" are by saying "volitional formations." The translators who translate sankhārakkhandha as "aggregate of volitional formations" do so because, (1) the suttas define this aggregate as cha cetanakāyā , "the six classes of volition" (i.e.,...

No. It's the human equivalent of being an impercipient deva: no cittas, no cetasikas and only one aggregate, the rūpadhammas in the rūpa-santati.

Re: 'drink and drugs that cause carelessness'

Dear Venerable would this then mean that intoxicants other than alcohol could be included? Yes if we take majja to be a noun ("an intoxicating thing"). But no if we take it to be an adjective qualifying the two previous nouns ("[ surā and meraya ] that are intoxicating"). The commentaries acknowled...

Re: i dont like the term 'unbound'

It may well be that Ajahn Thanissaro's choice .. comports better with the Ajahn Mun tradition's consciousness mysticism , to which Thanissaro is strongly committed. Bhante, Isn't it a deviation from classical Theravada? The consciousness mysticism certainly is, for viññānam anidassanam is not nibbā...

Bhante, What do you think about "Ma takkahetu" , "Ma nayahetu" and "Ma akaraparivitakkena" phrases of the same sutta. Do skeptical people skip them on purpose? [...] What phrase in Kalama sutta do chronology and phililogy belong to? Your questions presuppose an interpretation of the Kālāmasutta in ...

Re: i dont like the term 'unbound'

Someone may understand the cause of the origination of this view related to individual's deviation from the Classical Theravada. It may well be that Ajahn Thanissaro's choice of "unbinding" for nibbāna and "unbound" for nibbuta (as opposed to "blowing out" and "blown out") is because this rendering...

Re: Interesting Q&A in Vimuttimagga

a Buddhist commentary could use more Buddhist terms. this may show that the translator was a little distant from Buddhism. The Visuddhimagga refers to the practitioner as a "yogāvacara" ("one who's at home in exertion") nearly as often as it refers to him as a "bhikkhu". The word first appears in t...

but you also say that it means excessive drinking only? No, I think you've misread me. The opinion that moderate consumption of alcohol doesn't break the fifth precept is what I was arguing against . But I had to state the view in question before rejecting it. i recall disagreeing with you as it pe...

Re: 'drink and drugs that cause carelessness'

there was a forum member on here who i thought made a good argument: https://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?p=37437#p37437 in summary, it's the negligence from the intoxicants that is to be abstained from rather than the substances themselves. This was my reply to that poster (Kåre Lie) when he ...

Re: Puredhamma.net Warning !!!

You should stop talking derisively about "Waharakaist" conceptions. This is not about a "Waharakaist" conception. This is a matter of not comprehending Buddha Dhamma. I don't use the term with derision. I use it merely to distinguish your and your teacher's interpretation of Theravada Buddhism from...

Re: Puredhamma.net Warning !!!

How do you explain those translations of vedana and phassa ? In the three-life interpretation, the consciousness that ceases is the rebirth-linking consciousness that would have heralded a future birth but which now, owing to the cessation of ignorance, will not do so. With no rebirth-linking consc...
