Re: Can a monk tell his followers that he is not fully enlightened?

Ok for Sotapanna but how about Sakdhagami? What is the yardstick? The attainment of all the ariyan paths and fruits are insight knowledges. As such, there would be no way that a sotāpanna's arrival at sakadāgāmitā and the resultant attenuation of kāmarāga and byāpāda could be mistaken for an attenu...

Re: Can a monk tell his followers that he is not fully enlightened?

So the monk will definitely know that s/he is a Sotapanna, Sakdhagami and Anagami? Is it likely that someone who's "crossed over beyond doubt" ( vitiṇṇakankhā ; tiṇṇavicikicchā ) might be in doubt about it? It is worrying if that Bhante G is not even Sotapanna, what hopes we have? In Ven. Jayasaro'...

Re: Can a monk tell his followers that he is not fully enlightened?

I remember reading one strange case inside the sources, about somebody who was an arhant without being aware of that. I believe somebody posted the exact source time ago in this board. Unfortunately I cannot find it now. If somebody remember the case, it would be good to know Not arahantship. The b...

I should like to split the thread from your conversion testimony onward as the posts are off topic for the current thread. I invite you to propose a title for the new thread.

Re: Translating "satipaṭṭhānānaṁ" in dative case ???

To me it meant the standard formula has something terribly wrong with it. Then I read the two major Satipattana suttas were frauds concocted by abhidhammikas at the 3rd council. Are you referring to Ven. Sujāto's theory? If so, I would note that even he doesn't allege that the suttas in their entir...

Re: Can a monk tell his followers that he is not fully enlightened?

In the Milindapañha Ven. Nāgasena shows one way for bhikkhus to respond to such improper questions from unordained people - with a non-committal answer: Paṭisandhipañha The King said: "Bhante Nāgasena, is there anyone who dies and is not reborn?" Some are reborn, some are not," replied the elder. ...

Re: How many versions of canonical Theravada Abhidhamma exist?

Considering the thread's current trajectory, I believe it belongs more properly in the Early Buddhism than in he Abhidhamma sub-forum. I've moved it accordingly.

Thanks. I've put asterisks under all the dead links so that if anyone notifies me of updated links to the same resources I can add them.

Re: How many versions of canonical Theravada Abhidhamma exist?

The Pali narrative is that the Abhidhamma is the teaching of the Buddha in the aforenamed heaven relayed by that same Buddha to Ven Sariputta, if I'm not mistaken (am I mistaken here, bhante? Yes, the account has the Buddha descending each day to teach the Abhidhamma to Ven. Sāriputta in a form tha...

Re: How many versions of canonical Theravada Abhidhamma exist?

I didn't know that (according to Theravada) Ananda recited the Abhidhamma at the first council. Does any Theravadin truly believe that? In Theravādin Asia the account of the Buddha teaching Abhidhamma in Tāvatimsa is widely known and widely believed. In Burma it's almost ubiquitously believed. The ...

Re: Is it compulsory to accept Abhidhamma as a part of doctrine to be considered as Theravada?

Lets take an example : essentially how both below quote of internal external are differents ? Therein what is internal form? That form which, for this or that being, is personal, self-referable, one’s own, individual and is grasped (by craving and false view), (i.e.) the four great essentials and t...

Re: How many versions of canonical Theravada Abhidhamma exist?

Didn't Buddha supposedly teach that secretly to devas and Sariputta? And Sariputta would have been dead before this first council as well? In the Atthasālinī's account (see the link below) it was taught to devas who'd gathered from ten thousand world-systems, so hardly secretive. Ven. Sāriputta was...

Re: Why buddhist monks being called samana ?

Bhante , but it appears that in the vinaya those terms were not used except only bhikkhu . Even in the Vinaya there are passages where samaṇa is synonymous with bhikkhu. For example, one of the ways of announcing that you're giving up the bhikkhu training is by saying "assamaṇoti maṃ dhārehi", "Hol...

Re: Why buddhist monks being called samana ?

Was bhikkhu and samana synonym ? In some contexts they are synonymous, particularly when the words are being used in a valorized sense: "true bhikkhu," "true samana" or even "true brahmin". For example, "samana" as used in the Mahaparinibbanasutta: "Wherever, Subhadda, the Noble Eightfold Path is n...
