Re: Keep away from Mahamuna sect in Sri Lanka?

[No Buddhist country in the world has a continuous lineage of Arahants. Nor is there a generation of remaining successful monks. For this reason, yogis who meditate with the intention of attaining results are more likely to be deceived in various ways. It is not the fault of the yogis who sincerely...

Re: Two aspects of rupa?

What's the difference between the two aspects of form described? Say if you have a flower in your hand. It got earth property as Rupa and got the nice smell as nama. This is equaling of my first answer. Using the flower example, what is the difference between the 2 aspects of form in the OP...

Re: Retrofuturist's Brief Sutta-Based Refutation of Abhidhamma

Of course the earth element, as in hardness, is an ultimate aspect of direct experience before any conceptual overlay. More on this later. Rāhula, the interior earth element is said to be anything hard, solid, and appropriated that’s internal, pertaining to an individual. This includes: head...

Re: Is it compulsory to accept Abhidhamma as a part of doctrine to be considered as Theravada?

The difference lies in the word "other" in the definition of external rūpa. The rūpas that you take to be yours are internal for you, while the rūpas that others take to be theirs are internal for them and external for you. Iyo this is exactly the same with what Buddha said in the other suttas ? An...

Re: KATHA KV 18.8 Of Hearing in Jhāna

I understand the Theravada argument but:
The way I understand in first Jhana you have Vitakka and Vicar in First Jhana.
Hypothetically can we keep sound as a meditation object? (I think there is a Western monk teaches sound Jhana)
If you keep the sound as a meditation object can you hear the sound?

KATHA KV 18.8 Of Hearing in Jhāna

KATHA KV 18.8 Of Hearing in Jhāna Controverted Point: That one who has attained Jhāna hears sound. Theravādin: If so, it must be equally allowed that he can also see, smell, taste and touch objects. This you deny … You must also allow that he enters Jhāna enjoying auditory consciousness. You deny, f...

I think that the whole Tipitaka is made by some schorly monks.
But does it stop you from attaining Nibbana with the aid of these theses?

Re: Retrofuturist's Brief Sutta-Based Refutation of Abhidhamma

That aside, if its greatest achievement is to "say the same thing" in a more cumbersome manner, then this does not seem to be of any benefit and thus it can be disregarded. Actually, it depends on each person. I understand the Sutta, my own way but I do not have enough support in Sutta to convey my...
