Re: Is it breaking of Vinaya if a monastery set up an endowment fund?

Perhaps the reasoning was that as in the West there is less support so making such an arrangement makes for more financial security..? In any case I would agree that whilst it doesn't necessarily break any rules per se it does to a degree contravene the tradition of giving in person with ones own ha...

We'll the Bhante-Āvuso system is a way to cultivate a few different qualities none the las fundamental, for example sovacassata (being easy to admonish,) puggaññutā (knowledge of persons), veyyāvaca (service) basic sense of hiri otappa etc. So yesterday I was with a nāvaka monk, he had some laypeopl...

Re: Sutta reference From Bhante S.Sobhana's blog

Hi Mike, oh it is DN 3, it was from an article about cāga so I assumed it was indeed from a section specifically on giving, maybe the author inferred it from the 4NT, anyways, thanks for pointing out the section I missed, will check the Sn reference now, on that link the Sn only went up to 200, how ...

Sutta reference From Bhante S.Sobhana's blog

Greetings dear Dhammacaris, Regarding this ... "The Buddha advised the young brahman Māgha on how to make a successful alms offering, he told him while offering to still his mind in every respect (sabbattha ca vippasādehi cittaṃ) and added that the act of offering (yañño) should be the basis (āramma...

Re: Genorosity

Just to add in parenthesis- in the pāli canon it is said the Buddha did not praise giving casually, and did indeed explicitly state to give with one's own hand, and give frequently too, so maybe find a local Sangha to support too? Be well upāsaka(s).

New logo for monastery

Hi fellow Dhamma seekers, There is a new monastery here and somewhat fortuitously I noticed on the paperwork a spelling mistake so thought to take the opportunity to change the logo all together as it is a bit generic, can't seem to find any decent/ good images, any suggestions, the name is cetiya ā...

Re: possible to ordain without name?

Often times, at least in SE Asia, you won't get called by your pāḷi/upasampada name, but it depends on the community, some places you can choose your name which is undoubtedly better. Good luck with your ordination upāsaka, hope you find a good place that works for you.

Re: AN 8.63: Lover goes back to the future to file for divorce from Jhāna

"..But when you translate an important word in meditation practice (metta, which derives from mitta = 'friend'), it's gross negligence to use a loaded ambiguous word 'love', when the actual practice of metta is unambiguously a platonic friendship, a caring and compassionate family member, neighbor, ...

Re: Requesting Sri Lanka Ordination information

If you do ordain there try to stay in the Galduwa tradition. If you do you'll find there's good places in SriLanka (arañña vāsī) style, if you go the independent route (no lineage) it's easy to get caught in worldy winds, so maybe try visiting a few different places and see how it goes before making...
