Re: Is Papanca commentary, identification or both?

Here's a rather comprehensive, and ostensibly authoritative, overview of the topic: https://audiodharma.org/series/16/talk/3019/ Two-days of talks on the topic, given in 2012 by Thanissaro Bhikkhu. "Papañca When discussing the sources of conflict—inner and outer—the Buddha pointed to a type of ...

Re: Absorption in Insight Meditation

Looks like one ought to keep noting mentally but there is no need to name everything... Yes. "Noting" is perhaps a s/w unfortunate word to use as in English it's connotation is rather light -- taking note of, noticing. The sense the Sayadaw Mahasi uses, more clearly in discussions of more...

Re: Absorption in Insight Meditation

"Noting", as per Mahasi's writings (and retreat instructions to this day at Panditãrãma centers) should get beyond the verbalization fabrication as soon as possible. It's really more "knowing" phenomena, becoming progressively more intense as one deepens the insight with greater...

Re: Absorption in Insight Meditation

That quotation in the OP looks like the Sayadaw may be aligning the 4 jhanas with various of his 16 stages of the progress of insight, much like the " vipassana jhana -s" as described in more detail by the Sayadawgyi Pandita (Chapter 5 in " In This Very Life " http://www.aimwell....

Re: Let's help eachother develop jhanas (take two!)

Hi guys, Can you please keep this thread on the topic of Jhanas, specifically 1-4 rupa jhanas and 5-8 arupa jhanas. Here is the definition for those jhanas in case you need a refresher, http://www.leighb.com/jhana8.htm Remember, the recipe for entering first jhana is 1) Initial and sustained thinki...

Re: Abhidhamma teachings in the Suttas

A slightly tangential detail -- surprised to find, in a recent Pali class nearby, taught by a Burmese translator, with students from vaious SE-Asian countries, that they pronounce "abhidhamma" as "aBHIdhamma" (accent on 2nd syllable), rather than "ABhidhamma" as most Am...

Re: How is Mahasi not a samatha practice?

Just to clarify, to put in perspective, that "Mahasi practice" (as the " vipassana " practice) is a method the Sayadaw developed and taught in the context of the 20th-century movement to revive, popularize the Buddha's practice, to counterbalance against the colonialist (British)...

Re: How is Mahasi not a samatha practice?

A footnote on "noting"... In Sayadaw Mahasi's writings, and in contemporary retreat instructions (e.g. at Tathatgata Meditation Center -- monks from Sayadawgyi Pandita lineage) the "naming" aspect is a crutch for beginners, to be abandoned as soon as possible. "Noting" ...

Why not use the just finished translation of Ajahn Sujato's designed to be easily understood by non-academic English speakers? Because... it doesn't exist. The only translation he has done in the KN is the Theragatha. https://readingfaithfully.org/verses-of-the-senior-monks-theragatha-ebook...
