Re: Doha can't just be avidya....

Any kind of wrong view is delusion. Examples: perceiving permanence in what is impermanent, pleasure in what is dukkha, self in what's anatta, attractiveness in what is unattractive, wholesomeness in what is unwholesome, unwholesomeness in what is wholesome.

Re: He set forth the Dhamma, good in the beginning, good in the middle, good in the end?

Re: He set forth the Dhamma, good in the beginning, good in the middle, good in the end?

In his introduction to The Discourse on the Fruits of Recluseship: The Sāmaññaphala Sutta and its Commentaries , Bhikkhu Bodhi writes: [...] the Sāmaññaphala Sutta sounds a triumphant and lyrical proclamation of the fruitfulness of the course of spiritual training founded upon right view. It is the ...

Re: He set forth the Dhamma, good in the beginning, good in the middle, good in the end?

The Visuddhimagga has: 69. Well proclaimed: in this clause the Dhamma of the scriptures is included as well as the other; in the rest of the clauses only the supramundane Dhamma is included. Herein, the Dhamma of the scriptures is well proclaimed because it is good in the beginning, the middle, and ...

Re: How do you radiate mettā?

I start with the feeling/intention and have the heart and/or the body glow and open/expand in a warm effervescent way (in all directions but without thinking about directions in particular) and then expand the radiance "to infinity". (—but maybe the heart/body thing is just a consequence o...

Re: Abiding vs Striving - in the context of the N8P

I see striving as effort, and abiding/dwelling as implying an extended period of time. I see striving like "going", and abiding like "staying" or "remaining", "living in a place", with more of a connotation of continuity or constancy over a period of time, as ...

Re: Would it be better to push someone off a cliff, or just think about it?

Say you kill an ant while walking but unknowingly. There is not mental action to kill the ant. :goodpost: The rest of the sutta does mention it: There might be the case where a Nigaṇṭha is restrained with the fourfold restraint: constrained by all constraints, yoked to all constraints, cleansed by ...

Re: Trans monk and precepts

So while someone already being an established monastic, I think it makes sense the Buddha would say " well ok just go to the other sangha and keep the same seniority", but this doesn't necessarily point to anything regarding ordination allowances and indeed I find this line used more by l...

Re: Keeping a cool head in times of hatred

Billions of animals get killed by humans every day. Many others get eaten alive by wild predators. Animal families are torn apart. Yet one can keep a cool head while extending metta to them all and refraining from harming and killing.

Re: Trans monk and precepts

If a woman transitions to a msn but does not get surgery can he ordain as a bhikku? The Vinaya has the following which can be informative: At one time female characteristics appeared on a monk. They told the Buddha. “Monks, I allow that discipleship, that ordination, those years as a monk, to be tr...

Re: Keeping a cool head in times of hatred

Personally, I find the best approach is to cultivate the full range of brahmaviharas - not only loving-kindness, but compassion, sympathetic joy, and ultimately equanimity. :goodpost: I feel terribly upset by the current news of daily atrocities over the last two months. Re: Seven weeks or four weeks?

Four weeks, under different trees: Soon after his awakening, the Buddha was staying at Uruvelā on the bank of the river Nerañjara at the foot of a Bodhi tree. There the Buddha sat cross-legged for seven days without moving, experiencing the bliss of freedom. Then, in the first part of the night, the...

Re: It is all about coming to a "when"?

[...] He is likely saying "awareness", not "when". Similarly, at the 21st second, he says "it's all about coming to awareness", and there, "awareness" sounds very much like "when". P.S. Just like auto is saying above (sorry, I hadn't properly read t...
