Re: With Sanghamitta Day looming...

Ven. Sanghamitta arrived in Sri Lanka with the 'gifts' of the Dhamma and the sapling of the original Bodhi Tree. The traditional gift exchanges during Christmas could remind Buddhists of the gifts Ven. Sanghamiita brought to Sri Lanka. For those who like Christmas trees, the tree could also represe...

With Sanghamitta Day looming...

... I'm curious as to how you all keep it, if at all.

How do you observe the day? And if there's no temple near by for you to visit, what then?

Pure, 'unadulterated' curiosity, I'm afraid.

Thanks for any replies!

Re: Buddha and the CNN Hero Awards

In my opinion, The Dhamma is the purest gift the human race has received; surely 'passing on' it's words to others is the greatest gift, or act of charity, of all? :namaste:

Re: Meditation is dangerous?

Thought I'd throw in, though it has been said (sort of) already. It's pretty common for people to have a powerful meditation experience and come out wondering if they are now a buddha. If you have sufficient skepticism in your character, this idea will fall apart, but if not, you get what I would d...

Re: Do you find Hinayana offensive?

Hi Emi To me, if someone were to refer to Theravada as Hinayana when speaking to me, I'd have to ask the reason why they'd stopped before the term 'Theravada', and gone with the word 'Hinayana' instead. I certainly wouldn't be thrilled. About 23 years ago I was invited to attend a puja at ...

Re: Meditation is dangerous?

Thank you so much for your replies

I've never personally had one of these experiences. Now I understand that the potential 'danger' is not a physical one, but one which can cause mental harm if everything is believed, and self becomes more important.

:namaste: friends, this forum is fantastic.

Re: If there was no Theravada, which tradition would you pick?

Despite me agreeing with many posts already here, which flow along the lines of 'if there was no Theravada, there would be no other traditions', and about the opinion that all other schools have just drifted from Theravada, if I were forced, I think it'd be Zen - zazen intruiges me. :juggling:

Meditation is dangerous?

I've been attempting to research this more thoroughly, but people appear to be split right down the middle about it. Recently, I discovered something called 'binaural' music - forgive my ignorance if you're all already aware of this, but I accidently stumbled across it on YouTube! :embarassed: Anywa...

Re: is music a hindrance to the jhanas?

So does this mean that 'meditation music' is a big no-no? Disregarding separate people's abilities, is it theoretically impossible to remain mindful whilst having music on in the background? My experience tells otherwise. Sometimes, a quiet, lengthy track helps me focus, and keep my mind where it sh...

Shwmai from Wales! :)

Hello all at The Dhamma Wheel, my name's Emily and I'm 17 years old :) I've been a lay Buddhist (practising) since the age of 10, but I was first exposed at the age of about 8 or 9. I had been a member of (much missed) E-sangha for coming on 6 years (as 'Xonikz') when it went down, and ever since I'...
