Re: Dvayatānupassanāsutta & Meaning of ārambha
This definition from the PTS dictionary is interesting, particularly when adding the second definition to the mix: ārambha 1. attempt, effort, inception of energy (cp. Dhs trsl. 15 & K. S. p. 318 2. support, ground object, thing Ne.70 sq., Ne.107; an˚; unsupported, independent Snp.743 (= nibbāna...

Re: Dvayatānupassanāsutta & Meaning of ārambha
It is funny, when I created the original post yesterday I totally missed to realize that ārambha (Devanagari: आरम्भ) is a very common word in my own native language (Nepali) and Hindi where it means "initiation" or "beginning". I believe it has the same or similar meaning in Sa...

K.R. Norman translates it as "exertion", with alternate translation (from either I.B. Horner or Ven. Walpola Rahula) as "tenacity".

Re: The School of Life - "Who am I?"
Uh oh....I think I'm in trouble, because my values and character have also changed significantly over the years. That was a well-done video, though I was a bit surprised that they stopped where they did, settling on character traits. Thank you for posting it, acinteyyo. I'm glad to see you again, my...

Re: Buddhism and Career
Hello disciple, AN 8.54 is a relevant sutta that echoes what many here have already advised. The sutta starts with a householder asking the Buddha to teach Dhamma to those who are enmeshed in worldly lives of sensual pleasure: There Dighajanu the Koliyan went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, havi...

Re: "Fermentation" translation
I have heard the translation "intoxicants" used, as the āsavas essentially intoxicate the mind, distorting perception.

It was sad to see katavedi...getting chased away.... I'm still here, my friend, watching the train wreck from a safe distance. Since David didn't seem interested in reasonable, respectful discussion and seemed to have already made up his mind about the topic, I couldn't see any benefit in engaging ...

Hello Spiny,
When the mind is concentrated (unified), phenomena become clear, i.e., one can see them in detail (e.g., their arising, passing, necessary conditions).

Re: Focusing while letting go
I agree with Mike. Perhaps the letting go also refers to letting go of involvement with what's occurring in the present -- not getting hooked by these events, but just watching them come and letting them go by.
