Re: Is it appropriate for lay person to question the teaching of a Buddhist monk?

It doesn't matter if a teacher is a monk or layperson, famous or unknown. If they teach Dhamma correctly they should be praised , and if they misrepresent Dhamma this should be pointed out. https://suttacentral.net/an5.238/en/sujato 238. Deserving Criticism (3rd) 238. Re: Heratic teaching of Ajahn Sumedho?

Why don't take your concerns directly to this monk, instead of gossiping? Or, would that be a heretic behavior? The question at the very start of the video does exactly that, but I do not think Ajahn Sumedho answered the question satisfactorily by referring to viññāṇaṃ anidassanaṃ anantaṃ sabbato p...

As stero's post implies, satipatthana is really about understanding what is present, not what we think should be present.

He changed his Facebook picture ten days ago. He looked fine and healthy. I suspect he committed suicide? :( I hope he is well and happy wherever he was reborn. May he have attained stream-entry or once-returner and escape this horrid samsara at some point. :candle: i've been informed that ...

Re: Looking for a Sutta... Knowledge of Evil

There is a Commentary about this but I can't remember where it is . In the commentary there is the question of one who does akusala such as killing. One who thinks it is harmless, and the other one who knows it is wrong but kills anyway: which one is worse? The one who is ignorant of the evil of kil...

Re: An argument for ultimate reality from a Theravādin perspective.

Bodhi's pithy explanation is quite good. https://www.nku.edu/~kenneyr/Buddhism/lib/bps/misc/abhiman.html Briefly, the dhamma theory maintains that ultimate reality consists of a multiplicity of elementary constituents called dhammas. The dhammas are not noumena hidden behind phenomena, not "things i...

Re: ākāsa- space

As far as I can tell Ven. Nagasena doesn't outright say akasa is asankhata. And remember he is referring not to the spaces between rupa (akasa-dhatu) but the unbounded space such as in the Rahulovada sutta. So in the Milindapanha unbounded space is said to be sabbaso agayho (cannot be grasped), sant...

You are right, as far as I can tell. But then the question is, how do people get "right view"? Just have faith?

Re: No. of wives allowed during Buddha's time?

Regardless of how many wives might have been allowed to be "married" what has this question to do with adultery? If more than one wife is allowed, then it is technically possible for a married man to have sex with more than one woman without breaking the precept. So why you've opened that thread at...

"Pure logic" leads to nowhere good. this is flawed logic Flawed logic? Maybe because you modified my post to suit your argument... I'm sure most would agree (even you) that "papañca leads to nowhere good." In academia, this is called "academic hishonesty." It is heavely frowned upon and usually lea...
