Not killing or harming is a basic discipline in Buddhism.
Very true, and it's a wonderful ideal.
Unachievable, however, unless we choose to kill ourselves - which is also considered a grievous fault in the dhamma.

Killing Insects https://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=19806 :anjali: :goodpost: Yes, this is a question which comes up repeatedly. For the very good reason that there is no simple answer. Responding to an attacker (whether it's a mosquito or a person) is almost always a matter of mixed k...

Re: I cant lose weight. How can I lose weight?

absolute rubbish. Have you already read the book? No. I don't need to after what you said. Did you disagree with something in it? I probably disagree with almost everything in it if your intro to sums it up accurately. Of course, if you got it wrong, Nestor may (just possibly) have got a few things...

Re: I cant lose weight. How can I lose weight?

The book Breath by James Nestor said that for every ten pounds of fat one loses over eight of them leave the body by way of the breath. When oxygen is taken in and used, it leaves with a carbon atom. This adds up to a significant amount. You can do more for your metabolism and weight by learning ne...

Re: I cant lose weight. How can I lose weight?

How much exercise are you getting? I do some walking. But I want to focus on diet as I see result with it. Keeping a health weight relies partly on input (diet) and partly on output (calories burned with exercise). Just saying. Spiny is right but it's easier to lose weight by restricting food than ...

The OCBS link worked for me.

It's a good article, too. even though Wynne does allow his narkiness towards other scholars to shine out in his last paragraph.

most australian people i heard had irish accent or most ireland english speaker sound similar to aussie :rolleye: . It's true, actually. I didn't fully realise it until I went to Europe for a few weeks, maybe ten years ago. Visited Germany, France, Belgium, Scotland (skipping England, but I had bee...

... You're muddling or conflating "inter-connectedness", "one-ness" and "dependent origination" again. We separated them quite carefully earlier in the thread, with considerable help from Thanissaro. :reading: :namaste: Kim Where? Metta Start here https://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?p...

Re: we are all inter-connected

... it accords with the aims of the Dhamma and helps realise anatta. I agree, but the way it helps realise anatta may not be obvious to all of us, and my take on it may be a bit different from others' views anyway. For what it's worth, I think "interbeing" and other approaches to interconnectedness...

Re: we are all inter-connected

Best discussion of this subject: https://www.dhammatalks.org/books/Noble&True/Section0007.html :thanks: It's very good. It is, however, mostly an argument against the notion of oneness, not the notion of interconnectedness. A key passage, for me, is - This outer side of intention is what the Buddha...

One monks perspective on 'interbeing'... https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/tricycle.org/magazine/we-are-not-one/amp/ Personally, I feel that talking of 'seeing' rain clouds & sunshine when holding a piece of paper in your hand, trite, mushy and going wildly astray from the Buddha's teachings... why n...
