Re: Complicated issue I'm facing with meditation and mindfulness

Sloth and torpor can show up in different forms, for example, when the mind is dull, slow, lacks clarity and sharpness. In another thread, we discussed lack of motivation. For many of them, walking meditation is helpful. I've also experienced sometimes a state similar to what you're describing. And ...

Re: Doubting supernatural side of Buddhism

Yes, but I guess it's important to point out that doubt, skepticism, confidence dependently arise and cease.

Re: Complicated issue I'm facing with meditation and mindfulness

there still is this feeling of being in a dream, exactly like when you just woke up and for the first few seconds of your day
That may be describing "sloth and torpor".

From the OP's description, I'm guessing more towards confusion.

Re: Is thinking of death to "let go" harmful?

none of this really matters
I don't think it doesn't matter, it is part of your path.

But it is equally part of the path for people who are actually homeless, not only have thoughts or worries about this matter.

Re: WAR

Don't be naïve. In practical world this would not work. In Sri Lanka bus load of monks went to have a peaceful discussion with tigers. (Tamil Separatists) Of course it would work. Except that it might not have the desired result. And many things don't ... Have the desired result. I am sure we can f...

and happens quiet in the same place with the same song or video... There is another thing, which is less obvious and maybe a bit difficult to explain. It could be that next time you hear the song, you want to "check" your body and see if the sensation is there where you know it usually is. And mayb...

Re: WAR

There are more possible approaches. There was a monk, and I'm not sure who this monk was who gathered few other monks, and some followers I think and started to do walking meditation in the middle of the battle, along the line between the combatants. Being peaceful is an art and a science and a way ...

Re: How to maintain a good enough practice

Mindfulness of breath, the breath body, mindfulness of body, feelings, thoughts, mindfulness of the aggregates, I meditate daily and have done for years but to do all this other stuff seems like a massive mountain that is impossible to climb. Where is the obstacle ? I mean to finding moments during...

Re: Vipassana and Qi energy?

Mind cannot follow the Qi, if you meditate you should know it by experience. What do you mean, could you elaborate in therms of mechanism ? What is that "cannot" ? Is that the Qi is too fast and the mind is slow or that the mind cannot see the Qi, or the mind can see the Qi, but is stuck and unable...

Not different than various forms of communication.

Maybe see it like right speech versus wrong speech versus idle speech ?

However I've had difficulties with it lately so I've been searching around for some other methods. What difficulties ? This ^^ is where you should start. Different meditation types cultivate different mind skills. And the same meditation instructions can cultivate different wholesome or unwholsome ...

Re: Kamma, Ethics and Hume

It's not clear to me how and where you apply Hume's quote to Buddhism. you haven't given me a moral reason . What exactly is a moral reason, what are you looking for ? How can there be ethics if there are no beings to make choices? Yes, you may have a problem there, and my guess is it may have somet...

Re: What should condition one to follow the precepts?

1. Habit - establish a daily practice. If 1 hour is too much, start with 5 minutes.

2. Mindfulness - if you happen not to follow the precepts be mindful of your related mental states.
As much as possible (for example, alcohol and certain substances limit the ability to be mindful).

Re: Meditation traditions?

Probably meditation can't avoid Samatha, even if it wanted to. But some traditions won't dedicate a certain timeframe (let's say 3 days, or 3 weeks) where they say: now you do Samatha and nothing else. Re: Vipassana and Qi energy?

Actually, when a person is dead, the consciousness continues (in a form or another).

And if you think of it ... so does the body - in a form or another.

But this doesn't seem on topic.
