Re: Why Are There So Many Black Buddhists?

Ultimately it depended on me to pay attention (...) Not paying attention to your surroundings can be dangerous. (...) fail to understand why their behavior is actually pretty natural and even expected We don't have to tolerate bad behavior. From Snp 1:7 : Whatever man is angry, resentful, evil, mer...

Re: Why Are There So Many Black Buddhists?

At the end of the day you can't just blame others for the anxeity you feel. I must mettafully disagree. In the example you provided, your anxiety seemed justified. It was the result of how others treated you, and not solely fabrications of your own mind. Our anxieties wouldn't arise as quickly if p...

Re: Responding to Critics and Anti-Buddhists

Wise words.

From Dhp IV. Translation by Ṭhānissaro Bhikkhu.

Focus,
not on the rudenesses of others,
not on what they’ve done
.....or left undone,
but on what you
have & haven’t done
.....yourself.

Re: Memorizing Suttas - Methods?

I usually memorize things through a lot of repetition: hearing or reciting it over and over again.

Apparently, the technique explained in this video is a better approach. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks promising.

Re: Devanussati: Recollecting the Devas in Practice

Thank you. :anjali: Researching these lesser known practices are sparking an interest in learning Pali. I wonder if these practices would resonate even more in their original language. So far I've memorized Buddhanusati, which is pretty simple-ish: iti pi so bhagavā, arahaṁ sammāsambuddho, vijjācara...

Re: Why Are There So Many Black Buddhists?

I still can't understand the problem. Does this mean Jewish and white people have the monopoly on Buddhism in the West? I'm basically saying that some Buddhist communities could do better at "marketing" to non-White people. We shouldn't simply ignore them. People, generally, won't find the dhamma u...

Devanussati: Recollecting the Devas in Practice

The Buddha lived and taught in a society that was steeped in various beliefs in a world of gods, demons, spirits and the supernatural. Instead of adopting an iconoclastic approach towards such beliefs, the Buddha uses them as bridges to the spirituality of personal accountability and liberation. Th...

Same. I'm in my late 30s. Arguing just isn't as much fun as it used to be. I'd rather sleep.
Do you mean you would rather meditate?
:D
That, too.

Re: Responding to Critics and Anti-Buddhists

In general though I believe a person has no business being on a theravadan Buddhist forum if they absolutely deny the four noble truths and the noble eightfold path, relativistic doubting is ok, but absolute denial is not ok and troll level absurdity. I understand these sentiments. Skeptics tend to...

Responding to Critics and Anti-Buddhists

“Take a foolish person who memorizes the teaching—statements, songs, discussions, verses, inspired sayings, legends, stories of past lives, amazing stories, and analyses. But they don’t examine the meaning of those teachings with wisdom, and so don’t come to a reflective acceptance of them. They ju...

Re: Why Are There So Many Black Buddhists?

The intent is to reach out to anyone, anywhere- which is great. Every Buddhist school could learn from this example. If I'm not mistaken, the dhamma is for everyone's benefit. If a Buddhist community doesn't reflect the demographics (genders, races, ages, etc) of the country it resides in, maybe it...

Re: Why Are There So Many Black Buddhists?

I practice in SGI, since the late 80's. Most newcomers in the local small meetings are invited or at least referred from one of the regional SGI centers. The latter do get walk-ins, or at least inquiries- the streetcorner propagation campaigns of the 70's & 80's are long gone. Despite being in SGI ...
