Re: Some thoughts on Satipaṭṭhāna, Ānāpānasati, the Satta Bojjhaṅgā and Jhāna

A very interesting and thought provoking thread. Challenging certain teachings that seem to be based on tradition rather than the teaching itself. It is also amusing to see that self proclaimed expertise in the teachings can hide a pitiful lack of understanding... no mindfulness before having aband...

Re: Some thoughts on Satipaṭṭhāna, Ānāpānasati, the Satta Bojjhaṅgā and Jhāna

Yes, there can be mindfulness with hindrances! Really? Since mindfulness recollects right view, how can right view & hindrances occur at the same time? AN 10.61, for example, says the hindrances are the nutriment of/condition for ignorance. The hindrances only prevent concentration, and there can b...

Are dispassion & nirodha types of "samatha" ???

Note: This topic is on textual analysis and comparative discussion on early Buddhist sects and texts. Dear DW EBT forum MN 149 mentions samatha as one of two results of the Path/concentration, as follows: When the noble eightfold path is developed, the following are fully developed: the four kinds ...

Re: Some thoughts on Satipaṭṭhāna, Ānāpānasati, the Satta Bojjhaṅgā and Jhāna

Sutta reference, please  Looks like the attempt at discussion ends here; where one believes there can be "mindfulness with hindrances". :alien: I don't say that there is mindfulness of in-&-out breathing in one of lapsed mindfulness and no alertness , which is why the monk on that occasion r...

Re: Some thoughts on Satipaṭṭhāna, Ānāpānasati, the Satta Bojjhaṅgā and Jhāna

Since dispassion is the opposite of passion, I think it's much more classifiable as calm than insight. I think probably more research is required about the meaning of "samatha". Yes, I think that the latter is a later attempt to integrate the formless spheres into the buddhist practice. I think the...

Re: Some thoughts on Satipaṭṭhāna, Ānāpānasati, the Satta Bojjhaṅgā and Jhāna

I believe Wynne thinks that insight can occur whilst in Jhana, whilst I struggle to see how this can happen. I imagine certain insight can occur within a jhana, such as the insight into the selflessness (anatta) of consciousness & vedana. Also, insight into the dukkka (unsatisfactoriness) & sallato...

You mean liberation via 4th jhana vs liberation via nirodha samapatti?

Viraga is dispassion. Are you sure dispassion is classed as "samatha"?

Re: Some thoughts on Satipaṭṭhāna, Ānāpānasati, the Satta Bojjhaṅgā and Jhāna

what do you think about the below? I add that I agree with Wynne in considering the two distinct paths of calm and insight as later additions. The Buddha's path is one, culminating in the four jhanas. Calm and insight are complementary in the four jhanas. In Anapanasati both calm and insight are de...

Re: How to translate "vimocayaṃ" ???

.... Thank you Sir for your extensive explanation  . I found the words in AN 4.194: And what is the factor of trying to be pure in freedom ? Katamañca, byagghapajjā, vimutti pārisuddhipadhāniyaṅgaṃ? That noble disciple—who has these factors of trying to be pure in ethics, mind, and view—detach...

In summary, the liberation of step 12 is a liberation of samatha or purification.

The above is an answer to your adherence to that later interpretation, since you wrote about "liberation via samatha". It appears the above is the continuation of slander. Only a brazen fool would dispute me. I twice posted the reality, which you chose to ignore. A 3rd time: In cittanupassan...

Re: Some thoughts on Satipaṭṭhāna, Ānāpānasati, the Satta Bojjhaṅgā and Jhāna

That's what I pointed out: you confirmed that the first three tetrads are a mixture of calm and insight. You only failed to come to the logical consequence that liberation of mind in the 3rd tetrad is from both calm and insight. No. I do not fail, like your personal failure in right speech. I poste...
