Re: About paññatti 'concept'

Is it correct to say paññatti 'concept' is a conditioned phenomenon (dhamma), according to suttas, but not Abhidhammas? I don't think so. Especially, since paññatti in the suttas can also mean "mere designation", similar to Abhidhamma. Yes, mostly paññatti meant making known/lay down/set forth/decl...

Re: Dhammapada an EBT?

Kindly let me know the criterion upon which you deduced your opinion. Thanks If you can find, A Textual and Historical Analysis of Khuddaka Nikāya by Prof. Oliver Abeynayake is a very detailed work on the whole KN including the Dhammapada. It's not available online in a digital format. Dhp 28 - Yog...

Perhaps, lack of physical exercise/movements or they are not just one meal eaters as advertised. Some other possible reasons: 1. diabetes (for Asian monks it's a serious issue, since they are more prone to it genetically), 2. too much junk food 3. strong adherents of cheese & chocolate as allowable...

Re: Bhikkhu Sujato's Four Nikaya translations as Ebooks—October 2018

He states his reasons here... Thank you bhante. The translations themselves appear to have too much of a personal interpretation to receive widespread praise. Bhikkhu Bodhi's translations basically received high universal praise but I don't & can't see this occurring with the new (sectarian) transl...

Re: Anonymous (online) Bikkhus

As I am unable to recognize virtuous monastics by simply looking at them, I rather give to all. When one knows more Dhamma in theory and practice, plus the experience of behaving among them will make one more attune/mindful to their behaviors and possible intentions behind those behaviors. Even her...

Re: Shravasti Dhammika

This is a hard one for me. Once I forgot my Dana promised to a monk. The monk calls me at 11.00 am and said people are waiting for me. I asked for what. He said I promised to bring Dana for monks. I got ready quickly draw 80kkm and by the time I got close to the temple, it was 12.15. I went to the ...

Re: Bhikkhu Sujato's Four Nikaya translations as Ebooks—October 2018

I got the impression BS had a computer copy of VBB's translations and then changed some or many of the words. Of course, I could be 100% wrong here. I was around him when he was translating, and he seemed to be doing it from scratch. He was asking a lot of senior pali speakers their opinion on vari...

Re: Dhammapada an EBT?

Not much, huh ? ;) Already mentioned ;) Some Dhammapada stanzas are taken from Hindu texts such as Mahābhārata and Manusmṛti. I said taken from because they contradict with some suttas in four basic Nikayas. Your "list" cannot be trusted... Already mentioned a warning too  All the credit to ...

Re: What is merit?

Perhaps he/she meant non-Buddhist parallels. But then it would actually prove legitimacy. I think having the stanza or the meaning of it somewhere else in the first four nikāya s would actually prove legitimacy. That's my view only. However, Pali and Gandhari has one word difference. Can yo...

Re: Shravasti Dhammika

I was reading his The Broken Buddha . On page 68, he wrote about a "Buddhayana". I take his vision of another "organized religion" to be unwise. Buddhayana would be governed by a properly constituted and legally recognized mahasabha, something like the Board of Governors of the Methodist Church, the...

Thanks. I am generally a big fan of your posts here   but I think it would be courteous if you posted some relevant quotes. Yes, I know, but the venerable who provided me the below list has some serious issues to dealt with rather than making a final work of his parallel list. He said...

Re: Did Buddha say lay Ariya should follow the Vinaya?

Did Buddha say lay Ariya should follow the Vinaya? Ariya monks follow Vinaya out of respect to the Buddha and his words, but lay ariyas will not follow bhikkhu rules. If you read some origin stories in Vinaya, it's clear some Arahant monks even did things such as storing food before the rules came,...
