Re: Buddhism Expired, says Gnanananda

Whenever statements are made, we do not have to put them aside just because they were made after the Buddha. One could say the same about your statement! Of course. This is a free society. Buddha never even forced the Dhamma on the society. The quotations from the Milindapañha are themselve...

Re: Buddhism Expired, says Gnanananda

Thank you bhante and all others for the input. Out of all the references posted here that supports a 500-year expiry date, we have to put aside Buddhaghosa and Milinda’s Questions since they are evidently after the Buddha. This leaves us AN 8.51 and it’s parallels (I can’t read Chinese, so unable to...

Buddhism Expired, says Gnanananda

A Sinhala speaking friend informed me about an recent newspaper article (in Sinhala) by the famous Sri Lankan missionary monk called Kiribathgoda Gnanananda. He is the founder of Mahamewnawa Asapu. The article seems to be an episode of an ongoing exchange of verbal daggers between him and another fa...

Re: Why SuttaCentral is so Feminist

“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood .” :? Yep! I thought someone might laugh at it (or even offended) given the topic at hand  brotherhood noun -[mass...

Re: Touching Money

Also need to add, that monks who commit Nissagiya are still pure monks and object for veneration by junior monks. So if older monk use money, and junior monk don't use, junior still should venerate this senior, you can read at khandaka or at BMC part 2, list of who shouldn't be venerated, from rule...

Re: Why SuttaCentral is so Feminist

The recommendation about SuttaCentral by DhammaWheel as a theravadin resource guide (https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=3012) may be only on their EBT works. It seems like they do a great service by publishing suttas. But still they don't seem like Pure Theravadins. Pure Theravadins? This...

Re: Throwing food

One venerable dugout this quote from Vinaya. This is not directly throwing, but it shows how laypeople might see if monks were to throw/waste edible food. Now at that time a certain guild had food for an Order; many heaps of boiled rice were allowed to fall in a refectory. People … spread it about, ...

Re: Is it unwholesome to criticise ordained monks?

... Ive found that enlightened people and highly skilled meditators who know things through direct abhiññā tend not so spend too much of thier time on forums sadly. Very true... Indeed we need more enlightened people in this world, but the genuinely enlightened people seem to have no or less intere...

Re: Is it unwholesome to criticise ordained monks?

From 1st parajika rule: “Is it true, Sudinna, that you had sexual intercourse with your former wife?” “It is true, Master.” The Buddha, the Master, rebuked him: “ Foolish man , it is not suitable it is not becoming, it is not proper, it is unworthy of a recluse, it is not allowable, it is not to be ...

Re: Is it unwholesome to criticise ordained monks?

Please note that since 1963 upto now the act of burning himself to death by Tich van duc is internationally known to be an act of self mortification and heroic being patriotic. It was so published even by CNN and other media. What made this act unique is that while burning he sat in lotus position ...

Re: Is it unwholesome to criticise ordained monks?

Is it unwholesome to criticise ordained monks? In Vinaya, when people criticised monks (for valid reasons), Buddha never said anything directly or indirectly to shut the laity. This sutta even encourages investigated and scrutinized criticism. “Bhikkhus, possessing four qualities, the foolish, inco...

Re: Is it okey to buy Meat in a foodstore and eat?

just like the meat-buyer isn't necessarily requesting that suppliers kill beings Sometimes the seller can be the supplier/butcher too. Anyhow, buyer's demand is the reason why a seller requests suppliers to provide meat. If no one buys meat (no demand), no seller woudn't bother to sell meat. "The d...

Re: Help me expand - New Monks

There is one more thing at pa-auk who criticised the abhidhamma just briefly and now he can only get jhāna for 20 minutes. It was enough for him to finish the course and see his past lives and know why. Sayadawgyi says this example often. I know one teacher who told me he could only get 20 minutes ...
