Re: Memorizing Suttas - Methods?

Once upon a time I memorised the Bhikku Patimokha. It takes a fair bit of effort. Listening to others chanting is helpful. You need to establish the rhythm in you mind. Start with small chunks and then extend and extend. In the end it becomes all about remembering the next couple of words. One phra...

I think the idea is that the MN10 has been added to over time. Not the same as "inauthentic" or "forgery".
These debates puzzle me and in my humble opinion, have not made much progress since Rhys Davis.

Re: Sutta teachings about forgiveness

The entire story of Angulimala is very instructive. I believe he was a part of some type of proto-shivaite-thuggee cult and collected body parts of murder victims. When he became a monk this didn't mean the the community of victims necessarily forgave HIM, but he was taught to bear the hatred that h...

Re: Many failed relationships divorced lost custody of child and 35 years old living alone

Hi I'm 35 newly divorced after a nine year marriage and living alone. I had a child from a previous relationship that failed after three years and I lost custody of her shortly after our separation. I tried to date again but I ended up getting sexually transmitted disease raped verbally and physica...

Re: does anyone know of good asubha resources?

I came to add something, but I also bookmarked quite a few links here. Thanks for sharing, all. Personally what I have used for asubha in the past was "Body Worlds," Gunther von Hagens' plastinations. Whenever I see a beautiful woman in public, I recall Body Worlds and....ya....it helps. https://bod...

Re: Eradication of Buddhism in India

An opinion quoted below (which seems to blame Brahmanism and which I personally disagree with). Do you know why Buddhism disappeared from India? Different people say for this, that or the other reason: for example, because foreign enemies came in and oppressed the religion. I don't think that is the...

Re: Eradication of Buddhism in India

Just not me. I disagree. Take the expulsion of Ajahn Brahmavamso from the Ajahn Chah order of monks. The primary reason for this was AB's ordination of women. But a lesser additional criticism was thrown at AB at the time, namely, his focus on teaching "lay people". In other words, the teachings of...

Re: Eradication of Buddhism in India

Agree with your summary. Its a huge subject...yet....not a lot written about it in English, hence my ask if anyone recommends anything. Another thing to ponder is that while Hinduism mixed a lot with Buddhism, what is the benefit of the caste system? If anyone attempted to impose this on our modern ...

Eradication of Buddhism in India

The Buddha was born in Nepal, and lived mostly in Maghada. After Ashoka, Buddhist teaching was spread all over greater India. Even before the Muslim invasions, Buddhism was declining in India. It seems that both Brahminism and perhaps to a lesser extent, Jainism, contributed to this. Right now I am ...

Physical posture during seated meditation

The Suttanta stock formula is very basic: "when a bhikkhu has returned from his almsround, after his meal, he sits down, folds his legs crosswise, sets his body erect, and establishing mindfulness in front of him" I'm wondering if anyone has experience adjusting to find an optimal seating arrangemen...

The Ten Precepts requires abstaining from things like (https://www.accesstoinsight.org/ptf/dhamma/sila/dasasila.html): sexual activity, intoxicating drinks and drugs, dancing, singing, music, going to see entertainments, wearing garlands, using perfumes, and beautifying the body with cosmetics, lyi...

Re: New to Buddhism...stuck in the Bible Belt

Thank you! I've been studying and learning more every day, and I feel like a different person already! Basically, around this town if you aren't Christian they will do 1 of 2 things towards you: 1. Constantly try to convince you of their beliefs being the only way to go, or 2. Completely shun you a...
