Re: Why do students prepare to pay to learn Dhamma?

I some times wonder why some students prepared to pay so much money to attend a retreat while there are so many free retreats available. Are there any special attractions in the paid retreats. Some discussion related to this topic. https://discourse.suttacentral.net/t/is-it-appropriate-lay-people-t...

Re: about the 5th precept

I think that too many in the West get wrapped up in fitting the rules to themselves in a legalism borrowed from Christianity. The majority of Buddhists in the West are lay people and don't have to live the strict moral life of monastics. The rules aren't for punishment like the Mosaic law, but to t...

Re: Meditation Teacher Shot by Police in MN

How many people here would like to have a career in law enforcement in america? If we want to solve this problem then perhaps if people who were more sensitive to the problem became police officers this would help. Seems like people here are more sensitive to the problem.....what's keeping you from...

Re: Meditation Teacher Shot by Police in MN

While obviously this is a tragedy, we know almost nothing about what happened and therefore can't ascribe motivations or judgements to people involved. Yes, I agree. In all these instances I wait until getting more information until I make a judgement call. Even then it can be difficult as it is fi...

Re: Thailand Trip- Seeking Advice

Hi sister, Regarding places to do a retreat i suggest googling 'dhamma teaching in english chiang mai' or just 'english dhamma teaching thailand' and see how that goes...depending on where you end up, doing 'dana' could mean offering alms say in the morning if there are monks on 'pindabat' or you c...

Re: Thailand Trip- Seeking Advice

I will be traveling to Thailand this year in November and plan to divide my trip between Bangkok and Chiang Mai for a total of 13 days (with a side trip to Ayutthaya). I'd like to stay longer, but I have to get back to my job. I plan on hitting up the major sites and Wats while in both t...

Re: Aussie Buddhists - 6 min documentery

A nicely produced video. The monastery looks stunning.

It would have been helpful if they explained why he can't touch his mother or any other female. They spent a lot of time on his family, but didn't offer an explanation for the rule. I think that would have given a better context.

Meditation Teacher Shot by Police in MN

Justine Damond – the name she used professionally – was in her pajamas speaking with a police officer who was in the driver’s seat of a police vehicle that responded to her call when the officer in the passenger side allegedly “pulled his gun and shot Damond through the driver’s side door,” The Min...

Re: Does Buddhism really "resist" secularism?

Just practice and study Stoicism and leave Buddhism out of it. Secular Buddhism is just as silly as saying Secular Hinduism or Secular Islam. If a person is uncomfortable with cultivating faith in certain aspects of a tradition, it is not right of them to change it to suite it their own neurosis or ...

US Mormons Engage in Buddhist Mindfulness Practices https://www.buddhistdoor.net/news/mormons-in-us-engage-in-buddhist-mindfulness-practices- Mormons are very nice people- genuine and sincere. This is happening because their religion is, unfortunately, built by a scam artist, full of made up texts ...

Re: about the 5th precept

if this has been covered delete the topic no worries Every single Buddhist forum I have ever been on going back to email lists and Usenet in the 90s has brought up the 5th precept almost all of the time. Yes, I believe even r/Buddhism has limited discussion on this topic as the crowd of, "Hey man, ...

Re: Why good people become bad online trolls

Greetings, "Gamer-gate" scandal (handling on-line abuse of women players) That's not at all what Gamergate was about. Gamergate occurred because third-wave feminists like Anita Sarkeesian were objecting to the representations of women in computer games... either in terms of under-representation, or...
