Re: DN16: How to explain this WRONG explanation about earthquakes?

I was just reading Ṭhānissaro Bhikkhu's appendix on Udāna and found it. Gonna leave it here.

It doesn't matter if the Buddha was omniscient or not. It doesn't change the Dhamma. But let's not delude ourselves.

Re: DN16: How to explain this WRONG explanation about earthquakes?

I'm no materialist. But it doesn't mean I have to believe the Buddha was omniscient. ;) There is plenty of evidence of the Buddha not knowing about certain things in the suttas or even giving unscientific responses. Can you explain this , for example? This topic was absurdly ignored and you can see ...

AN 4.131: bardo/antarabhava?

What person has given up the lower fetters and the fetters for getting reborn, but not the fetters for getting a continued existence? One extinguished between one life and the next. I always heard Theravada denies antarabhava like the plague, but this sutta seems to support its existence. https://s...

Re: Space depends on what?

Which of these ideas about space is correct? Is space like an infinite void waiting to be filled? Or does it only exist in the context of matter? It turns out that we are fairly certain that space is neither of these things. Space is definitely not an empty void and it is definitely not just a rela...

Re: Space depends on what?

Now the arupa attainments make more sense.

Gross form > subtle form > even subtler form (dark matter) > non-form (consciousness) > neither form nor non form (nothingness).

Re: Space depends on what?

It’s in the room with you now. It’s more subtle than the surveillance state, more transparent than air, more pervasive than light. We may not be aware of the dark matter around us (at least without the ingestion of strong hallucinogens), but it’s there nevertheless. Although we can't see dark matte...

Re: Space depends on what?

Since the Buddha described only nibbāna as unconditioned, nothing else is unconditioned. If space is what we understand, ie, a blank sheet of the universe, then it may sound unconditioned, but this is more like our misunderstanding of what it's. It seems it's only a kind of matter to be occupied by ...

Re: Space depends on what?

Why isn't space unconditioned? dark matter Dark matter is a form of matter thought to account for approximately 85% of the matter in the universe Finally a convincing response. So, space is actually subtle matter? I just read this: Another explanation for how space acquires energy comes fro...

Re: Space depends on what?

Metaphysics aside, how does that prove the point? Consciousness doesn't have to be bound in form or space, it's the underlying layer to space, it precedes space. Consciousness is its own independent element. If space is infinite and doesn't depend on the existence of form or consciousness to cogniz...

Re: Space depends on what?

Actually, I'd like to make a correction, it appears that at the time of eating the honey dew, they are no longer in the rupa-loka, but in the kama-loka. Such as the lower heavens. Still, it doesn't say they're on Earth.. There is no sense of taste or food in rupaloka. That's why the Buddha sa...

Re: Space depends on what?

I don't see what that has to do with "more about Earth".. It only shows that he's talking about the universe as a whole, i.e. pre-big bang. But yes, the entire universe contracts. It has to do with "more about Earth" because the events described in the sutta after the descent from the Brahma realm ...

Re: Space depends on what?

I got your point but it was not really greed of Brahmas what made the cosmos expand. This is just the natural process of the universe: alternation between retraction/destruction and expansion/evolution. The sutta says it was loss of merit or lifespan what made them fall from rupaloka. There is no gr...

Re: Space depends on what?

It literally says stars and constellations appeared.. and the other sutta I linked talks about galactic supercluster systems and such. Yes, because beings descended from the Brahma realm. They were self-luminous, so they didn't need stars. It seems, though, all the universe collapses toget...
