Re: Pannobhasa (David Reynolds) on Morality

Here's a link to an interview the venerable did with Brian Ruhe on YouTube: http://bit.ly/2VeKZzQ Not an endorsement of any views expressed in the video...soley for the purpose of information. OK, maybe for entertainment a little bit. BTW I don't know if this has been hashed out on older forums, but...

Re: Laurence Carroll (U Dhammaloka). The first western Buddhist monk?

If we are considering possible anonymous Westerners ordaining based upon foreign presence in Buddhist kingdoms, then there were eight or so centuries after Alexander when Greeks were there in number.
Depending, of course, on whether ones definition of 'Westerner' includes Greeks.

Re: Can Theravada buddhist temple accept non buddhist donations ?

The title of your post asks one question, and the text of the post asks another. Regarding the first question only... in Burma it is not uncommon to see non-Buddhists making offerings to monks and temples.

There'll always be folks advocating that "Orgasm-to-Nibbana" practice. Pay them no mind.

Re: Where to find Luangpor Dhammavuddho's talks?

So I went to YouTube and found one of the venerable's videos. Beneath the video, and above the comments section, are a few lines of text. If one clicks on "show more" there is a drop-down of more text. In it are listed three source for more talks,.. one is YouTube (?), another is Facebook which I do...

Re: characteristics of ariya

Thanks santa... I looked at those suttas and it seems clear that the implication is that a being can consider him/herself a sotapanna if he/she, among other accomplishments, keeps the five precepts. An eel-wriggler might posit that after attaining the first path, the sotapanna might then not need ke...

characteristics of ariya

Not sure if this is the appropriate forum for this. If not, please repost elsewhere. I would like to know if two things I have heard are based on the Pali Canon, or the commentaries, or are just cultural beliefs. The first is if a sotapanna is incapable of breaking the precepts. I assume the basic f...

Re: Original Mind Controversy Explained - by Bhikkhu Sujato: (6:53 mins)

A. Sujato : "Burmese monks meditate and see kalapas; T.F. monks meditate and see jit deum..." (rough transcription). Reminds me of something I heard a long time ago about the early years of psycoanalysis. Patients of Freud were said to have had Freudian symbols in their dreams, and those of Jung Jun...

Re: How should a Buddhist dress?

Many years ago I was surprised to see a mural inside a wat in Chiang Mai that depicted a scene in which women were bare-breasted. I guessed that it was a depiction of life in old Lanna Kingdom. Wikipedia states that " Bare chests and bare feet were accepted as part of the Thai formal dress code, and...

Re: Overcoming Fear of Death

Technically, I don't think you can practice to overcome the fear of death. But if you earnestly practice the path, the fear of death will disappear at stream entry, or at least that's the traditional teaching. I could be wrong but I have heard that fear of death is only abandoned at the final stage...

But if she does go to the shariah courts, chances are they'll sentence her to death for apostasy, right?
No, there is no death penalty for apostasy in Malaysia. The two ultra-religious states tried to get such a law passed a few years ago; but there's no desire for it in the country as a whole.

Re: Is it okay to read buddhist text while i am using the toilet, having a smoke?

Leaving aside the sacred/profane question... I have found that reading of any kind while sitting on the toilet is detrimental to the functioning of ones innards. Maybe best to just concentrate on the job at hand...

“Bouncing cosmology inspired by regular black holes,” ....... the universe expands and contracts in a cyclical way.

Your body is already equipped to detoxify itself, that's your liver's main task. Getting rid of 'toxins' (whichever they may be) through various detox products is a multi-million dollar business that seriously lacks any scientific justification. A professor of complementary medicine agrees: http://...
