Re: Those good old light bulbs again ...

There will probably be an English translation of it somewhere. In brief, it shows how laughter and joy gives good ethics and leads all the way through samadhi, satipatthana etc. to paramattham nibbanam, to the highes meaning, nibbana. Thanks. Yes there is an English translation, by the Pali Text So...

Re: Landmark Translation Conference at Deer Park

Greetings, Thoughts? I have mixed thoughts about this. I think it's great for those who will benefit from the reading of these scriptures, but on the other hand I think it's potentially unfortunate that we might, in English language discussions, see more things that the historical Buddha never actu...

Re: Those good old light bulbs again ...

:jumping: That is great. I added that to the article Ven. Dhammika started and I added to at: http://dhammawiki.com/index.php?title=Humor" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; In that article you should also add the text from Patisambhidamagga, Paññavagga 6, which gives instructions for ho...

Those good old light bulbs again ...

How many meditation teachers does it take to change a light bulb? Fifty. One to actually do the work, and forty-nine to offer reflections on it. How many joss-stick Buddhists does it take to change a light bulb? Why bother? Kwan Yin will do it for us. How many monks does it take to change a light bu...

Re: What colors do you see in meditation?

When doing walking medtation on the lawn, I see mostly the colour green. I often wonder what the deeper symbolic significance of this might be.

Re: Yes, Pet Shop Boys

A little OT .... but since we are talking about music .... Once, when I listened to Beethoven's 9th, it struck me that these four movements illustrate the four noble truths. 1st movement: unclear, searching, suffering ... dukkha 2nd movement: strong, energetic, powerful craving 3rd movement: quiet b...

Re: Yes, Pet Shop Boys

Shame on you all! As good Theravadists you should stay with The Teaching of the Elders in music as well as in the Dhamma! Anything later than Bach is nothing but Mahayana of music, not to mention the Tantrayana of pop and rock! In order to be converted to the True Theramusic, take a look at this vi...

Re: Yes, Pet Shop Boys

Bach is all well and good, if one likes Abhidhamma music, Bach Abhidhamma music? He he ... I liked that one! but I grew up on plainsong of the Gregorian variety, in other words back as close as we can get to original music. Gregorian? That one is pre-buddhistic ... it goes back to Rig Veda ....

Re: A comprehensive manual of abhidhamma by Bhikkhu Bodhi online

Hi all I've heard that novice bhikkhus in Myanmar learn this compendium by heart to begin their studies. Has anyone ever come across a recording of bhikkhus reciting it? I think listening to that would be a great way to internalize it and it's concise enough to make it possible. Metta, Phil Learnin...

Re: Zazen and Vipassana

Dont know if this has already been brought up, is Zazen and vipassana the same? I have no Zen training, so do not take my word as a statement of absolute truth. But from what I have heard and read, I have the impression that Zazen is less structured than most Vipassana (or, more correctly: Satipatt...

Re: Titles of the Buddha (in Pali & English)

Hello. As one of my research projects, I have been compiling a list of the titles given to the Buddha in Pali literature. So far I have 26. I know that there are many more. I think that each one is an answer to the question, "Who is the Buddha?" Several are said to be pre-Buddhist terms for enlight...

Re: Gods in the Canon

Couldn't quite deside where to put this so sorry if it is in the wrong place! I know there is mention of what the Buddha considdered a Brahman, and Monk, to be but is there any mention in the suttas of what he considered to be a god? Thanks in advance Manapa This question - and an answer to it - ha...
