Re: Do we need a friend in life?
Hi: Its not healthy to have no friends. If you are around a father you develop certain things, if you are around a mother you develop other things. Same with friends, you will share a different side of your personality, that needs to be polished. Of course this doesnt mean you should peak the first...

Re: After a year of meditating....
Hi: Just dont do the same thing expecting different result. Most common mistake is meditating everyday but always doing only 20-40 minute sessions. Try longer periods, 2, 3 hrs, if your body cant take it just stretch every half hour for a couple of minutes and restart the practice. If that doesnt le...

Re: cessation of consciousness
Hi: Yeah, in Buddhist there are a couple of different context for "cessation of consciousness". 1)in dependent origination one interpretation is that without ignorance there is the "cessation of defiled consciousness". 2) This means that someone without ignorance, like the Buddha, still obviously ha...

Re: Clarification of not-self and 'the doer'
Hi: Actually yes, "i am" is the owner of actions. "I am" is a mind with craving. When there is craving, there is owning. When there is owning there is suffering. Craving is the function of the mind thats making the impersonal personal. But does the "I am" which is the owner of actions, have the sam...

Re: The teachings of Ven. Waharaka Abhayaratanalankara Thero
Hi Lal:
From this interpretation, the statement found in suttas "a sotappana will be reborn at most only seven times before attaining nibbana",
do you take it as 7 jati or 7 bhavas?
Regards.

Re: Layman monastic life
Hi: Like the Buddha said, "it is not easy as a lay person to live the holy life, like a polished shell". Personally i think its painful, unless you have very good conditions. Because ok, you probably can stop listening to music, but your neighbor speakers are super loud. You stop having sex, and a g...

Hi:
An Anagami still can be functional in the lay life.
They can still work, pay rent, buy stuff, etc. Even being married, but without sex.
Regards.

Re: Buddhist view on trance.
Hi:
In the suttas there are some accounts of certain gods or spirits taking possesion of someone´s body (ex: Mara "the evil one").
There are also accounts of people making "spiritual scams", which constitutes probably 99.99% of this mediums.
Regards.

Hi:
Well when it comes to purchasing expensive gifts you just have to give at the proper time and be sure it would not offend the other, while also not being of bad taste.

Re: How often is a Samma Sambuddha born?
Hi: No that is incorrect. The life span of humans at the time of Kassapa Buddha was 20.000 years, so he lived before this "generation of humans". There are some estimates, but probably billions of years ago. The Buddha in that sutta smiles because at the same spot Kassapa used to live, by that he m...

Re: Our Last Moments
Hi: Last moments before death are very important, as it can decide where a person will take rebirth. Of course its not the only moment of our lives, so a person living a good life that ends up dying suddenly, with pain, or afflictions still would probably be reborn in a good place. The idea is to di...

Re: Wanting as an ability
Hi: Psychology and self improvement advices are almost always reasonable, and when we think they don´t agree with Buddhism, is most of the times just a misunderstanding of the teachings. Im trying to imagine your case, something like: "i want to be a pianist, but my father and friends told me i suck...
