Re: Slandering buddha

There's the Kesi Sutta approach, too. I think a combination of the Canki Sutta (Safeguarding the truth) and the Kesi Sutta (on how to train) will help you overcome this false dilemma. You can leave at your leisure, but I think you don't have to hold so fiercely to the idea that others must be banish...

Re: Slandering buddha

Your views are welcome. The discourtesy is however something I don't think is helpful. I have not understood. I am as faithful a Buddhist as can be, but I don't see the point in denigrating people on the board. I just find it tiresome and not really worth doing. I know in the Canki Sutta there are w...

Re: Slandering buddha

People of wrong view should not be called worthless, yes. They should be slowly exposed to the right view, and once they practice, they slowly come to know what kind of wrong view they have, and then they can let it go. That requires meditation and we can't meditate for them, nor should we try to bu...

The above quotes, yes. The Saw Simile quote not included? Not yet. I'm working on it, patigha is the worst hindrance.

Re: Slandering buddha

You miss context a lot. "The worthless man" quoting immediately is often followed by the "But now you, foolish man, not only misrepresent me because of your own wrong grasp, but you also injure yourself and give rise to much demerit which, foolish man, will be for your woe and sorrow for a long time...

Re: Faith and Doubt: Why are we quarreling lately?

I'm actually grateful they allowed this discussion to progress as far as it has. It's as I said in OP, I am willing to have discussion and I said what I think the problem is. If we were compassionate and respectful these issues wouldn't have lead to so much quarreling, but here we are. I don't know ...

Re: Slandering buddha

@ Right view for clarification, sorry Samvara! I disagree. You have overextended your aversion to those who are plagued by skeptical doubt, and worse you used the words of the Buddha to do so. By doing so you create a lot of demerit for yourself, and it could cause you a lot of trouble for a long ti...

Re: Faith and Doubt: Why are we quarreling lately?

My definition of a devout Buddhist would be those who are Ariya including Faith-Followers, Dhamma-Follower and the higher stages. I even think that non-Ariyans are essentially unworthy of using this forum, let alone using it to corrupt the Dhamma and should therefore be very greatful. Devotion of t...

Re: Faith and Doubt: Why are we quarreling lately?

Reflection of course. I'm saying for example if a person looks at their own actions before quarreling and a Devout Buddhist asks themselves "am I being compassionate to the skeptic?" And the answer is no, then they should exercise restraint, likewise for the skeptic, they prepare to quarrel and they...

Re: Faith and Doubt: Why are we quarreling lately?

Remember this is not about spiritual autonomy, it's about unprofitable quarreling. I gave why I think the reasons are.

Re: Faith and Doubt: Why are we quarreling lately?

Except there *is* a chasm, and it *is* causing the very issues I discussed. We could claim this is a thing to do with ditthi, but we can't claim it isn't a thing affecting our board right now. It's important to understand some discussions about what exists in a conventional and ultimate level is des...

Re: sutta-sharing subforum

I actually think it would be unique and similar to the sutta study group Mike has, but it allows us to pick and choose what Sutta we want to discuss and what relevance it has to our own experiences and life.

Re: NAMO TASSA BHAGAVATO ARAHATO SAMMĀSAMBUDDHASSA

The suttas here have a theme, and that theme is how conviction is necessary to become a disciple and succeed. I feel this is relevant to my discussion about faith and doubt. Just as before, the importance of faith in the tiratana is immeasurable. Faith in the three jewels is good.

Re: Do you believe in the infallibility of the Buddha's word?

This is twice that people have mentioned Bible Thumping in this subject. We aren't Christians. We're Buddhists. I get you might have an unfavorable background with Christianity and their fundamentalism but this is like comparing apples and a canary. Our confidence and faith in the Buddha grows with ...

Re: Do you believe in the infallibility of the Buddha's word?

Svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo: sandiṭṭhiko akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaṃ veditabbo viññūhī ti. The Dhamma is well declared by the Blessed One: visible here and now, immediate, inviting to come and see, effective, to be individually ascertained by the wise. The best way to find out, Sarath sp...
