Re: Getting over a bad past?

Hi Sonzai! I may have felt similar when I was your age. But didn't have the maturity to change for the better. Also, although I found to the Pali Canon somehow, I didn't trust today's Buddhism and thought after 2600 years, whatever institutionalized or organized practice there is today and calls its...

Re: Do you really find the Dhamma inspiring?

To be honest the idea of rebirth doesn't strike me as being a bummer, even being at the age I am at, having experienced unpleasant things and knowing full well that life will not be all sunshine and rainbows. What do you mean, it doesn't strike you as being a bummer, despite ...? Being at the age y...

Re: Extinction of Lust Through Chemical Means

I remember a story (a Pali Sutta or not?) where one of the Buddha's monks cut off his penis, because he could not rid himself of sexual desire. Then the Buddha said he had cut off the wrong thing. He should have cut off desire, not his penis. Don't know where I heard or read this and wether or not i...

Re: Name That Sutta?

Here is a German translation of it: http://www.palikanon.com/angutt/a08_051-060.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; It is called "Gotami Sutta" here, and listed as Anguttara Nikaya 8.51. AN 8.53 here is called Saṃkhitta Sutta and is about instruction by the Buddha to the newly ordain...

Re: The great honourable Mor

Good story.

The only thing that intrigues me is: How could the older sister who is supposedly too arrogant to accept help from her younger sister become a nun?

Re: The reason im not Theravada

What is more weird about Nibbana than there is about Dhammakaya? I do not see that Nibbana is defined as a "state" with certain characteristics, but just as the end of the path, the cessation of suffering, which for me is quite an acceptable concept. But what is Dhammakaya? To me this notion seems ...

Re: The reason im not Theravada

So what are buddhas in your understanding, as opposed to arhats?

Re: The reason im not Theravada

@Kenshou: No need to be unfriendly.

@tamdrin: What higher would you think there could be to attain than the absence of mental afflictions?
And would not, in the absence of mental afflictions, the further production of mental afflictions also cease if the causes are deeply understood?

contemporary arhants

After reading of the recent passing away of Phra Maha Boowa, who was supposedly an arhant, the question came to my mind if there are other known contemporary arhants (or recently passed away)? A question that has been lingering in my mind for long. I'm asking out of curiosity and interest what influ...

Re: Using Paradoxical Language

No, it's not. It's just Zen as far as I can tell.

In the Pali Suttas there is nothing paradoxical as far as I can tell. And the Buddha was very intent on presenting everything he could present clearly, unambiguously.

Re: On virtues

Buddhism is not some kind of computer RPG where you have to upgrade your character skills all to level 7 or something in order to achieve enlightenment in the final fight against the Boss enemy Mara. It is more about reality. You don't always know exactly where you're at. You have to deal with situa...
