Re: The Dhamma recalibrates your feelings and perceptions

When a hot touch sensory contact arises, he does not see it as good or bad or neutral, he only sees it as a hot sensory touch. He sees things as they are, not polluted by subjectivity (identity view). In other words, he only sees the raw data and his perception of judging the hot touch as good or b...

Re: What does ego mean?

Why is the ego always identified with something bad .. and not good .. why is Salvador Dali an egotist but not Mother Teresa (imperfect analogy but I am sort of at a loss for words) .. didn't both of them act from ego? Because in the case of evil unwholesome action, we can guarantee with 100% certa...

Re: Question about consciousness, nibbana and ultimate reality in Theravada

Is this teaching of the consciousness without surface fringe or the general Theravadin stance on nibbana, namely that a Buddha isnt going just poof? Is this preached and held by the majority of Theravada Buddhism? And which Pali word does correspond with consciousness without surface? Refer to a pr...

Re: Katha Kv 17.11 : What is sanctification of the Gift?

Well, well, there's still that gigantic self looking for gratitude, eh. That makes it so hypocritical to preach about non-self right in the post above that. No. Numerous posts of arguing yet still resisting the Lord Buddha's exhortations. :| The irony and hypocrisy of some massive ego who does not ...

I already said ... I said... I do ...you've .... my ... your... I am... I said ... I already... you're ... you yourself ... Emptiness (of self) purifies gifts.... its called sunatta.... unlikely beliefs in past & future life kamma can purify a gift Insofar as it is empty of a self or of anything pe...

Re: Katha Kv 17.11 : What is sanctification of the Gift?

In other words, a solicitor of a gift should express gratitude rather than obsess about the merit making of the giver or believe they are special conduit facilitating merit making. I already said thanks. And as I said, I do not get any benefit whatsoever from that gift you've donated to my friend's...

Re: Questions about stream entry

1. Is the first jhana enough to attain stream entry? 2. How long does it takes to attain stream entry? Is one lifetime enough or not? 3. Is it necessary to develop perfect morality? #1. While the jhanas would help, there's no guarantee in and of themselves. Even those higher formless attainments ( ...

Re: Katha Kv 17.11 : What is sanctification of the Gift?

Obviously a rare virtuous person, such as a Noble One, already has sufficient merit. Why would they need more? Asking such question is like asking why would a martial art master continues to carry out all his drills day in, day out; or a musical maestro continues to play his instruments! They do it...

Re: MN8/DN15: ending of perceptions of impingement/resistance

Hello santa100. I posted on this forum (Early Buddhism) for only one reason: not to read commentaries from Buddhaghosa or Classical Theravāda. And I also asked about personal experience (what it feels like) . Not everything in the Canon is so literal. There is a sutta which says your breath ceases ...

Re: MN8/DN15: ending of perceptions of impingement/resistance

I thought it was stopping perceiving the body, as if it was not present anymore while in one of the arupas, but rereading those suttas I wonder if it means anything else. That's pretty much it. Ven. Bodhi's note from "Connected Discourses" citing Comy's explanation of "impingement"/"resistance" Spk...

Re: Theravāda is

True, by the majority of people, yes, they would be declared the winner; however, they could still be wrong. Kissinger: "Mr. President, history will judge you well, that you were a good president." Nixon: "That depends on who's writing history." That's why binocular's video is not quite a good anal...

Nah, no undisputed world heavyweight champion, but he's still Sugar Ray Leonard, one of the best pound for pound super-middleweight champs of all time!
