Re: evil person or just evil actions?

Perhaps I am mistaken but I know of no culture where murder is considered 'normal'. There are situations within many cultures/societies were the taking of human life is considered acceptable or even appropriate. There is a suggestion that morality is not dependent on culture nor religion and that i...

Re: evil person or just evil actions?

Evil is also relative. What would be seen in one society as evil could be seen as normal or even just or righteous in another. One counties evil malevolent demon can be another's hero. It would also seem that the karmic consequences of an act are also not determined by the nature of the actual act b...

Re: Late origin?

I see two advantages in pondering over the uncertainty of the accuracy or even authenticity of the suttas:one does not get entangled in dogmatism regarding the contents of the suttas and seeing the unreliability of intellectual knowledge, one is pushed towards the practice, which is the only way to...

Re: Late origin?

As practitioners I don't think that we need to worry too much about late and early origin as the teachings are not meant as an historical record. At this stage in the game I think ideas of real and fake are irrelevant.

Re: 1000 Bhikkhunis in the World

Achan Chah argued that it didn't matter what your lineage was it was how you behaved as a monk that is important. I'm not sure that that is really the right way to phrase it. The story I have heard is that Ajahn Chah asked Ajahn Mun if he should reordain in the Dhammayut and Ajahn Mun asked Ajahn C...

I don't think that not being able to remain celibate is the number one reason for monks disrobing (going off topic).

Re: the great rebirth debate

tiltbillings I'm not sure if I understand you correctly but when you said "The second question relates to your comment: What to do with it?". Do you mean what to do with the teaching of rebirth? If so I would say pick it up if you want. Put it down if you want. reflect wisely. investigate. use intel...

Unfortunately it is a bit of a catch 22. One's promotion (+ one's style of promotion) is an extension of one's views/personality.

Re: No rebirth

It looks clear to me. What I see a lot in this thread are those who cannot accept the Buddha taught rebirth because it flies in the face of what they can accept as being true and so they go through a lot of mental gymnastics to make their point (unconvincingly). I guess it's kind of similar to the ...
