Re: Thai Forest Teachers

The Thai forest tradition is almost solely focused on meditation. As the tradition's name indicates, the monks often wander in the forest by themselves meditating for years on end. Sutta and book learning are not emphasized, Ajahn Chah said "The only book worth reading is the your heart" :) There ar...

Re: Pharmacological Aids to Enlightenment

Spend the money you would have spent on drugs on doing wholesome deeds. Nothing acts faster than kusala kamma for creating natural hormones that are good for your sense of well-being. When the mind is happy it is easily concentrated. The concentrated mind can see things as they really are, which le...

Re: What makes one a Buddhist?

Buddhism is like a sport, where you develop skills by practicing. The first step to being a Buddhist is to understand that people cause themselves to suffer. Then you must practice using the tools, like meditation and mindfulness, to develop and refine your skills - the skills needed to end sufferin...

Re: Confession

I had recurring angry thoughts about work when I was with my family to the extent that I was not enjoying my time off with my family. One thing that helps me is to keep in mind that human perception is very selective. I don't trust what I think, because my perception is probably wrong, or even in th...

How effective is Metta Meditation ?

I have just begun to incorporate some metta meditation into my practice, and am interested in hearing experiences of people who have used metta long term. My goal is to reduce anger, and also to sleep well at night. Anger and worry about my job at times prevent me from sleeping and I have read that ...

Re: Bhikkhu Thanissaro and other scholars on Mahasi

I think its in his "Not Self" series of talks someone asks him about the Mahasi method and Thanissaro simply replied that he was not trained in that method, so he can't answer questions about it.

Charging Money For the Dhamma

Some of the books I am interested in reading are only available for sale and I am interested to know what others think of charging for the dhamma. Below is a relevant quote I found. Thanks. Ajahn Thanissaro – No Donation Required “How can I ever repay you for your teaching?” Meditation teachers ofte...

Thanks for the informative summary, Billymac29.

Its really impressive the amount of resources Thanissaro pumps out, and unlike many others, he provides them totally free :) To me that says a lot.

Re: In need of a mentor.

Hi echograph, I am Persian, too.

Thanissaro Bikhus talks at dhammatalks.org. is almost like having a personal meditation teacher, since much of what he says I have experienced during meditation and it seems as if he were speaking directly to me :)
