Re: 10-day goenka retreat

You got me excited... I really like chanting. It gets some blood flow, forces some deep breathing, connects the thoughts to the body, has a soothing feeling, etc. Then I realized you mean I get to listen to somebody chant on a recording.... that sounds horrible!!

Re: Could someone please explain this rule?

daverupa, it seems you are taking a pragmatic approach, but if we're being practical one would have to convince a well respected senior monk to establish a new lineage that uses those modified rules. Zen monks don't follow the same rules, but I'm not sure the history of how that evolved.

Re: English Translations

More = Better ;) Just having fun. It is a good idea, but somebody asked Thanissaro Bhikku if Access to Insight was going to finish translating the Canon anytime soon. He kind of chuckled and basically said don't hold your breath. There are other sources, so maybe it could happen if a publisher was r...

Re: "Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure."

I think the quote means to say that some people are more powerful than they think, and fear is holding them back. And if you resonate with it, maybe it's true for you, and maybe overcoming that fear and gaining that power may be good for you. On the other hand if you take it too literally, it might...

Are you seriously comparing Charlie Parker with a rule book? Re: the great rebirth debate

Anybody here ever had a memory that was flat out wrong? And that's just within this one lifetime. (If you think the answer is no, then you should look a little closer.)

Re: Nature of time

To say that humans invented science is like saying we invented fire. Science is about listening to nature to learn it's languange and patterns similar to what the Buddha did for a totally different domain: subjective experience. Science focuses on "out there" while Buddha focused on "in here". The s...

Re: Nature of time

From a strictly scientific viewpoint, space-time is not separate from matter-energy. Does this translate to space-time is not separate from sankaras? The only thing left is Nirvana, and I will not speculate on that matter.

Re: "Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure."

I asked a zen monk if the Bodhisattva vow was selfish because it implied I had the power and importance to liberate all living beings. He laughed his sly laugh and said, "Scott, you greatly underestimate yourself. You do have the power to liberate all living beings." It gave me exactly the kind of f...

Have you run out of material? It seems sooo much is already available, I don't even have a long term desire to read it all. If you have, then hat's off, brother!

Re: Could someone please explain this rule?

Rules, rules, rules. Rules are boring. If you cannot live a decent life without obsessing about pointless, ridiculous rules, then what is your problem? I have to seriously question people who need to submit themselves to a legion of rules. It seems taking on the rules is an act of humility and devo...

Re: No rebirth

...I do think the Buddha taught rebirth, and I'm puzzled by the amount of energy some people put into trying to disprove it. As far as the Buddhadhamma is concerned, there is no doubt that rebirth is a central teaching. There is only doubt in one's ability to accept that teaching. The standard resp...

Re: 10-day goenka retreat

I just want to add that I will be attending one of these 10-day courses in March (I just got the acceptance e-mail today!). I'm trying not to expect too much one way or another. While I am slightly concerned about some of the cult criticisms, I also realize that any order for any spiritual practice ...

if you know the reason for putting on robes. you will know the reason for taking robes off. if you don't know the reason for putting on robes. you will not know reason for taking robes off.
