Re: regarding tomb worlds

There’s also:
“If the bones of a single person
for a single eon were gathered up,
they’d make a pile the size of a mountain:
so said the great hermit.

Re: Going to the forest

There are many accounts in the suttas where bhikkhus were killed in the forests. Still happens today. I can think of two snake bite deaths and quite a number of deadly cow incidents but can’t recall a single sutta where it is said that a monk was in the forest when some animal killed him. Sources? ...

Re: Is catharsis a valid Buddhist technique?

No, catharsis isn’t even a reputable technique in psychology. A second approach to deal with anger is to express it. This view treats anger as a kind of inner pressure or corrosive substance that builds up over time inside the person and does harm unless it is released. Catharsis theory fits in this...

You can be all-knowing too: At Sāvatthī. “Mendicants, I will teach you the all. Listen … And what is the all? It’s just the eye and sights, the ear and sounds, the nose and smells, the tongue and tastes, the body and touches, and the mind and thoughts. This is called the all. Mendicants, suppose som...

I wouldn’t worry about it. Unless you’re in a hotbox for some time you’re not gonna get a contact high. I would strongly encourage you to avoid neuroticism in this regard.

Re: Where can a 50 y/o man go to become a monk?

Frankly, I think any Sangha who would turn away someone based on their age alone has their priorities horribly skewed, and that such discrimination is not in keeping with the Dhamma or the Vinaya. Perhaps to that end, it's a good "red flag" of places to avoid... Apparently it’s been going on for so...

Re: What is best next to Theravada?

What is best religion next to Theravada? Why? You mentioned Theravada, so for this one I assume you mean which other tradition/school of Buddhism. Chan Buddhism; similar doctrines, similar practice, focuses on meditation, monasticism. What is best religion next to Buddhism? Why? Jainism (Svetembara...

Re: What will happen if i stop using snuff?

You may go through physical nicotine withdrawals for 2-3 weeks and psychological withdrawals for an indefinite period of time. Your risk of developing mouth cancer will also begin to decline over time. You’ll save money. It’s also good practice for resisting and overcoming craving. You may even be s...

Re: Possibility of ordination?

So you think a biological man who lost his testicles in an accident would be refused to ordain in a western monastery since he's not a man ? It’s an interesting question on what the reasoning would be for not admitting a eunuch. One could perhaps argue that if one is a eunuch through accident then ...

Re: Possibility of ordination?

You can get an idea of the testicles issue from pgs. 861-862 of Ajahn Thanissaro's Buddhist Monastic Code: Disqualifications The factors that would disqualify an applicant from receiving ordination are of three sorts: those absolutely disqualifying him for life—even if he receives ordination, he doe...

Anyone else relate? Any tips on socializing and conversing when your not thinking? Apologies if it's hard to understand, it's hard finding words to describe. I can’t relate but if you genuinely are going long periods of time without any internalized speech whatsoever then enjoy it. Although I do re...

Greetings Polarbear, To be clear, I didn't say they are myself , I said people might take offense at the possibility that the Buddha inferred they are . Some weak-kneed people who are prone to offense often get a bee in their bonnet about so-called "name calling". Do you have a better explanation f...

Re: What is Gossip? How to distinguish?

Curiously, Bhikkhu Bodhi translates this as "pointless talk" even though "tiracchāna" literally means "animal". I suspect he is just being politically correct, because some people might be upset to learn that their pet obsessions were regarded by the Buddha as bestial topics of conversation, and th...
