Re: What if everyone were Buddhist?

Well I guess all the alcohol producing industries would have to change their product and start making medicine. Once they did this and the word got out you might be surprised at how many people there are in the world who have illness which can only be treated by alcohol based medicines.........hahah...

Re: What if everyone were Buddhist?

......... But I thought this whole question, and the Path as well, is about ideal. I guess we have really different views on the Path then......my view is that it is about everything in my experience and is to be a daily/hourly/minutely endeavor and not to be considered some "ideal" concept.....alt...

Re: What if everyone were Buddhist?

I guess prostitution would still happen as it is not ruled out by the five precepts.... What's the third precept? People could still be greedy couldn't they? If everyone were actually practicing rather than merely Buddhist in name only, and since selfishness is to be abandoned and selflessness is t...

Re: What is right view?

Hi acinteyyo, There is a lot to discuss here, but I would like first of all, to draw your attention to the words : "For the Tathagata, Vaccha, has seen this : ..." note the past tense. The Tathagata has understood form, its arising and its cessation. He has seen (understood) the arising of form, an...

Re: To Question or Not To Question, That is the Question

Nowheat, It seems that your main concern is whether we should question the Canon because it might not be perfectly transmitted. I think that putting aside the transmission issue one should still question the Canon since the Buddha taught that one should not accept what the Buddha teaches just becaus...

Re: Dhamma as a raft

To the extent that the Dhamma is the raft it is abandoned. I think the Buddha made it very clear that the raft is to be abandoned....even suggests that it might just as well be sunk. All the stuff that one learns from the Buddha's teachings which help towards awakening are not meant to be objects to...

Re: What if everyone were Buddhist?

I guess prostitution would still happen as it is not ruled out by the five precepts....also gambling.... People would still drink milk and eat eggs I guess...so there would be alot of old chickens and cows to take care of since we couldn't eat them until they died of natural causes....India has alot...

Re: What is right view?

2. Someone might think that views are delusions (false beliefs). This is better, but "false beliefs" implies the existence of true beliefs. My view is that basically for a worldling their entire experience is delusional....and consequently all their beliefs are delusional as well...or if you prefer...

Re: What if everyone were Buddhist?

I don't know if killing parasites using medicine (or any other means for that matter) would be allowed in this world of everyone keeping the five precepts....I"m assuming that "keeping" them means completely and unerringly following them.....are we to assume that there will be no children in this wo...

Re: What is right view?

Hi everyone, Several posters have quoted a passage which speaks about the conditions for the arising of right view. I have no objection to that passage but I suspect that I am understanding it in a different way. For me, the passage is talking about the arising of right view - which only happens on...

Chris wrote, "No. They'd know the type of mosquitos which infect humans with malaria, and they'd take skilful action in remaining indoors at dawn and dusk and use strong repellents for those parts of the body not covered by clothes. Re: What if everyone were Buddhist?

[quote="PaulD I don't think much would change. 90% of Thailand's population or even more is Buddhist and Thailand is known to be a hotspot (number 1 actually in the world according askmen.com) for sex tourism since prostitution is legal. Re: What if everyone were Buddhist?

I live in Thailand and for all practical purposes everyone here already does follow Buddhism (in one form or another) and frankly none of the hopful things people have posted are happening...or even about to happen...or even have even a tiny tiny possibility of happening anytime soon. Alcoholism is ...
