Foes are dehumanized. There is not a sense of shared humanity. Identity is almost totally associated with the grouping which is inextricably intertwined with religious identity. In the article it talked about eating sandwiches as a protest.

No joke (and just personal experience)...in almost forty years in the Kingdom, I cannot recall a single incidence of ever seeing a Thai eat (what an Occidental would call) a sandwich...more grist for the mill...
