https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIaY0l5qV0c Thought is an illusory thing.. Who is it that is aware of that i'm thinking?..then thrown into an amazing feeling of freedom of problems... These are sudden realizations so to read it may or may not make sense. We can see he talks even the moments before ...

Re: May someone tell me who this is?

Now the question is; What do I do with the amulet if I don't believe in it? Pass it on to someone else even though I do not believe in it? This goes against my current understanding of morals. Then I have the conflicting thought of disposing of a gift. Just keep it. It was a gift. If I gave you som...

Re: Bhikkhunis is not Aj Brahm's project.

In the early days of the bhikkhuni debate I was quite active in supporting full bhikkhuni ordination and I still am but see less of a need to do so now since there are already so many and regular ordinations going on around the world. The last I heard there are some 1,000 to 2,000 fully ordained bh...

Re: Bhikkhunis is not Aj Brahm's project.

Sorry, this is off topic... I think it's close enough to the topic (at least not as far off as a lot of what goes on in these threads), and indeed might clarify some points for me. Also, I think Ajahn Brahms was "excommunicated" by some sort of official Thai central Buddhist authority, not the Ajah...

Re: Bhikkhunis is not Aj Brahm's project.

... I think James is spot on. But I don't think it's necessarily a deliberate Orietalism conspiracy. It's what people are familiar with, are able to easily inteact with, and therefore what they notice. That's why a lot of westerners think that the Ajahn Chah monasteries are the Thai forest traditio...

Re: Honoring the Devas

Somewhere in a two-day teaching I've been listening to recently, Thanissaro Bhikkhu explained the recollection of devas rather along the lines of in that quotation in the second post (above, from bodom ): ". .. Whatever <virtuous quality> they were endowed with that—when falling away from this life—...

Re: has the smartphone destroyed a generation

IMO, that SOMETHING may be related to a drastic increase in the rate of change over time. ... The social fabric seems to be unraveling under the onslaught of too much information and no knowlege I think you pretty much nailed it. If too much information and no knowlege are what can unravel the soci...

Re: How to reach the 1st Jhana?

Hello my friends, I dont found this topic, and i would like to ask you about it. How to do it? :spy: Metta :) Find a good teacher to work with in person, preferably a monastic with long experience (and I don't mean B. Vimalaramsi). (forget amateur lay teachers, e.g. Brasington, Shankman, etc.)

Came out about 4 years ago. Here's a 1/2-hour SBA interview with her from about that time:

In this post: https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=30921#p451325 I mentioned Ven Analayo's discussion of Ven Nananada's discussion of name-and-form. ...Ven Analayo points out that Theravada and other sects had both a three-lives and a one-mind-moment interpretation co-existing in their text...

Thanks. That revives memories of their renditions of "Daddy Cool","Sunny", and "The Rivers of Babylon" which were heard everywhere back in the late 1970's when I was living in Germany.

Re: Why are far-right political views so predominant on DW?

Just a little over a year ago a poll was made for DW members' choices for POTUS. That thread was closed just a little over 6 months ago. (So it's a fairly recent thread and poll.) 47% chose Hillary Clinton 17% chose Jill Stein So that's 64% of DW members choosing a left wing or left of center candi...

Re: New Analyo Bhikkhu Book to be Released

So now V. Analayo is regularly "selling" books, and with testimonials from Jack Kornfield & Co. ... becoming just another populist "dharma" teacher? The adverb just would imply "a populist Dharma teacher and nothing more." Do you seriously think that this is the venerable's intention? Personally I ...
